Dry sections of Pearl and Flowood may see liquor sales soon, as Gov. Haley Barbour signed a bill that precedes putting the issue to county voters.
According to WJTV, the U.S. Justice Department has to review the legislation, but if the department approves, and 20 percent of the county's eligible voters sign a petition, advocates of alcohol sales can put the issue to a referendum vote.
Once on a ballot, a simple majority vote would make alcohol sales legal in the historically dry county.

Man, I know a lot of people in Rankin County who would dig dead relatives out of the ground to vote for this one.

Brian: I knew you were a democrat. :D Seriously, I'm glad they're getting a chance over there. I don't know if it'll pass, but it's a vote nonetheless.

I'm kinda mixed on this. If Rankin County votes "yes", then that'll be less revenue coming into Jackson. But a "yes" vote can also keep their drunks off of our roads. Damned if they do, damned if they don't.

The concept of a dry Rankin County is such a joke. I hope that limiting the voters to these areas will help get it passed but as for the rest of the county, they will continue to illegally transport their liquor across the county line.

I expect to see some opposition to this. There may be a segment of the population who thinks that they are "purer" than other counties because they are dry (on paper, anyway).

Dry? What's that? If "dry" means not buying: Rankin is dry. If "dry" means not consuming: ROTFLMAO. Sorry folks. You can't get in the parking lots of liquor stores on Lakeland or Old Canton for the Rankin County tagged automobiles.
