All Shook Up: Jam-Packed Weekend Ahead

Friday night, catch Akami Graham at Freelon's. Graham has consistently won top honors as Best R&B Artist in the JFP's annual Best of Jackson issue.

End August by doing something good for Mississippi's youth. Tonight, attend the "Rise Above for Youth" benefit dinner and silent auction at the Safe Harbor Family Church, starting at 5 p.m. Or, if the words "swine flu" have you all shook up, get the facts on prevention and a prognosis for the future from Dr. Paul Buyers at Belhaven College at 6 p.m. Find more details on those events and more on the JFP Events Calendar. If your thoughts head more toward an after-work drink and live music, the place to check is the JFP Music Listings page, for the city's most complete list of who's playing where.

Get your feet on the floor early Saturday. Mornings are the time for one or more of the city's markets for fresh Mississippi produce, and homemade and handcrafted goodies. Chose from the Mississippi Farmer's Market, Belhaven Market, Congress Street Market, or the new Jackson Roadmap to Health Equity Project Farmer's Market located in the old New Deal supermarket next to the Jackson Medical Mall. Later, head to the Downtown YMCA for Fall Fitness Expo, open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or come up to the JFP offices at 10 a.m. for a class on How to Sell Your Writing. (Call ahead to reserve your spot: 601-362-6121 ext. 15) Afternoon options range from making a bracelet at Dream Beads in Fondren to a book signing at Borders in Flowood. Saturday is also your last chance to see the Emmett Till exhibit at the Smith Robertson Museum and the Summer Dress Exhibit at the Manship House. Find details and more things to do on the Best Bets page.

Saturday night holds numerous stage options: Dance fans should head to Belhaven College for Talk Dance Company's performance of "shed." For theater buffs, Ridgeland High faculty members present "Steel Magnolias," and New Stage Theatre is hosting a reveal party for the annual Unframed series. If Saturday is club night, don't forget to check the JFP Music Listings page before you head out the door. And if you're looking for the perfect place to take your honey to dinner, a visit to the JFP Restaurant Listings and the Menu Guide will help you find just the spot.

Personally, I like my Sundays laid back. A leisurely brunch and a stroll through the Mississippi Museum of Art is just the ticket for a pleasant afternoon. Be sure to see both the "Mississippi Invitational" or "Name Change: One Artist, Twelve Personas, Thirty-Five Years." Or grab the kids and head to the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science for "Monsters of the Deep." Did you know the JFP lists local movie times, too? Head to the JFP Movie Finder for those listings.

Shameless Promotion Alert! Word is, folks can't get enough of our "I Get It Once A Week" T-shirts. Now, you can be the envy of all your friends, and you don't even need to win a contest. Just head over to the JFP Swag Store. (We even have boxers and thongs, but don't tell anyone.)

Is something missing? To make sure your event is listed on the JFP calendars, send the information to [e-mail missing] or [e-mail missing], or add your event yourself. It's easy!
