Donut entrepreneur Mark Scurlock is delivering Christmas a few days early for Jackson. This morning, Scurlock celebrated the grand opening of his new location at 125 S. Congress St. at the corner of Pearl Street in the heart of the city's downtown.
Long a local favorite, the original Scurlock's Donut Shop & Eatery on Robinson Road near Metrocenter Mall never fails to make it onto Jackson Free Press "Best Of" list for Best Donuts, and last year the shop came in first in the hearts of Jacksonians. "My secret ingredient is quality," Scurlock told the JFP in January.
In addition to donuts, the new location will have all the standbys city residents have come to lovebuttermilk cakes, cinnamon rolls and Scurlock's personal favorite, cinnamon twistsin addition to a full breakfast menu with eggs, grits, bacon and more. The location also features outdoor dining.
Scurlock, in his mid-40s, grew up in Webb, Miss., and attended West Tallahatchie High School. Following graduation, Scurlock attended Coahoma Community College where he was president of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America. While there, he met his soul mate, Beverly, and in 1984, they moved to Jackson, where they have lived ever since. The couple has four children, Lutaya, Mark Jr., Marquis and Tiffany.
"I believe in supporting the city of Jackson," he said earlier this year. "In order to be a prosperous city, you have to spend your money where you live."

After I go to the gym tomorrow morning, I'll skedaddle on over to Scurlock's on Congress and see what I've been missing.
