A group of diverse citizens who supported varied candidates in the recent mayoral elections in Jackson are putting aside their differences and joining together to help retire the accumulated campaign debt of Mayor-elect Harvey Johnson Jr. The event will be held at the University Club of Jackson next Monday, June 15, from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
"We want to express our commitment to unite and put the past behind us," reads the event invitation, sent to the Jackson Free Press via e-mail. Some of the more prominent names included on the invitation are: acting Mayor Leslie McLemore; fellow mayoral candidates Marshand Crisler and state Sen. John Hohrn; former Jackson Mayor Kane Ditto; developers Ted Duckworth, Andrew Mattiace, Leland Speed and David Watkins; state Sen. Hillman Frazier; restaurateurs Jeff Good and Jay Schimmel; former Secretary of State Dick Molpus; former Gov. William Winter and a host of other Jacksonians and concerned Mississippians.
"The most important statement we can make is the one in which we stand shoulder to shoulder to lift our glasses in recognition of the renaissance under the leadership of Mayor Harvey Johnson," wrote Jonathan Lee of Mississippi Products in an e-mail, adding that the event invitation should be shared "with anyone committed to the reawakening of the Capitol City.

Jonathan said it better than anyone could. I'm proud to have my name on there (not a notable like those above, but as a voter!), recognizing that this mayor is Our Mayor, and that it's time to come together for Jackson. I'm proud too that there's tons of folks on there that voted in the Democratic primary for Mayor Melton, Councilman Crisler (like myself), and Senator Horhn. It's time to band together and get PRO-JAK.

This is a great, positive sign. It's for Jackson to unite for the first time in our history.
