Karen Irby has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the deaths of Drs. Mark Pogue and Lisa Dedousis.

Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Tomie Green granted a continuance for Karen Irby today, postponing her trial until March 29, 2010, reports The Clarion-Ledger. Irby, 38, faces two counts of depraved-heart murder for her role in a February car crash that killed Dr. Mark Pogue and Dr. Lisa Dedousis. Prosecutors also charged her with aggravated assault for injuries that her husband, Stuart Irby, sustained in the crash.

At around 10:30 p.m., Feb. 11, Irby crossed into oncoming lanes on Old Canton Road in her black Mercedes, reportedly traveling 100 mph, more than double the road's 45 mph speed limit. She drove head on into a white pickup truck. Both vehicles then hit a brick retaining wall, and the truck burst into flames.

In the truck, Pogue, a third-year resident with the University of Mississippi Medical Center, and Dedousis, his fiancé and a resident at Jersey City Medical Center in New Jersey, never had a chance. The couple was spending time together in anticipation of Valentine's Day; both died on the scene.

Green originally scheduled the trial to begin July 6, after Irby pleaded not guilty May 11. By prior arrangement with the court, Irby is free on $250,000 bond.

Postponed Eight Months my butt. If she was not Irby and a moneyed white woman she would be tried next week. Just like the Melton BS; the justice system has collapsed and justice is only for those that can buy it.
