A bill exempting sales taxes on back-to-school shoes and clothing for one weekend a year is headed to the governor's office.

House Bill 348 headed to Gov. Haley Barbour's office yesterday for his signature.

If the governor signs the bill into law, parents would get a sales tax exemption for buying back-to-school clothing and shoes from noon on Friday to midnight Saturday on the last weekend in July. The exemption would apply to items costing less than $100.

The bill amends laws already on the books exempting many items from sales tax, including vending machine food, and sales to certain non-profit organizations.
