Ward 3 Councilman Kenneth Stokes will propose $2-per-hour pay raises for employees of the city's Public Works Department reports WAPT. Stokes is aiming the raises at those who have worked over the past couple of weeks to fix the city's broken water mains in the wake of several days of sub-freezing temperatures.
"Workers in the deep holes cutting pipes and handling water and freezing temperatures. It is just important that we let them know that we understand that we need the public works department if the city is going to move forward." Stokes told WAPT."
Stokes proposes to use $2 million unspent from the city's fiscal year 2009 budget. In 2008, the Jackson City Council voted against raises for the department.

I don't know the history of pay raises, but everyone needs raises from time to time for cost of living, at the very least.

Stokes has a hidden agenda.... continued political support. What I would support is a one time bonus for these employees, but not a pay raise that the city cannot afford nor can it sustain. I am deeply appreciative of what the public work employees had to endure to give us running water again. However, Stokes is a very astute politican who knows how to keep his base in his corner. U better RECOGNIZE ....
