The Brett Favre Story Leaves Us Wondering : Did He or Didn't He

A story broke late last week on the website deadspin.com about former Southern Mississippi and current Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre. The story accuses Favre of sending racy text messages and video to Jenn Sterger a former New York Jets game hostess.

Call me cynical but I have reservations about this story. When stories like these break most are quick to believe them and take them for the gospel.

I have learned to take a wait and see approach to most stories like this. Why? Because for every story the media gets right like Tiger Woods infidelity, they strike out on stories like the Duke Lacrosse team and Kobe Bryant.

Just recently, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger was involved in not one but two allegations of sexual assault. The Steelers quarterback, who returns from a four game suspension this week, was never charged in either case.

Roethlisberger might have committed the crimes he was accused of but they could not be proven. Do I think Big Ben is guilty? I am not sure, but I do believe more went on than the police could prove.

While the Favre case is not a criminal matter as of yet, it does compare to the cases above. Also in an interesting side note this is not the first time this season a player or coach with the New York Jets has been accused harassing a woman.

A reporter for Mexico's TV Azteca, Ines Sainz; alleged harassment while attending a Jets practice while waiting to interview quarterback Mark Sanchez. The Jets and the NFL quickly handled the matter, with Jets owner Woody Johnson apologized and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell ordering a training program for all 32 teams on proper conduct in the workplace and that the program would be underwritten by Johnson.

Back to the Favre story, there are things to take into account before taking a stance on this story. First of all deadspin.com did not get this story from Sterger but a third party that the news organization paid for.

In fact, deadspin.com admitted to paying more for this story than any story before, and one has to question the validity of a story that is paid for. Most news outlets do not allow stories that are contingent on the source being paid.

Now does that mean the information in the story about Favre and Sterger is wrong? Well, factor this in as well; deadspin.com acknowledges that the person who sent the texts, videos, and voicemails may not be Favre but someone pretending to be Favre.

This raises red flags on this story once more. Anytime someone claims to have evidence of something in one breath and also says it could be faked in another breath, it gives me pause to believe what they are feeding me.

In deadspin.com favor is that since the story broke two massage therapists have come forward and said that Favre sent them voicemails and texts as well. That would show a pattern of behavior against Favre.

Then I have to ask myself this, Favre spent 16 years in Green Bay playing for the Packers and has spent nearly two years in Minnesota. After the ugly breakup between Favre and the Packers, no one came out and said Favre sexually harassed female employees with Green Bay and no one in Minnesota has come out against Favre either.

Favre has a troubled past and has battled a Vicodin and alcohol additions. Even before they were married Favre's wife Deanna wrote in her book that Favre had a wondering eye.

The couple has been married for 14 years and there have been no stories since before they were married that Favre has been anything but faithful. Deanna Favre's silence is a reason for concern if you believe Favre did nothing.

Favre himself has been silent as well only saying to ESPN about the accuracy of the reports "That will take its course." Also Favre said he would have "no problem with talking to the commissioner" if Goodell wanted to speak to him.

I have followed sports my entire life and there is not much that surprises me anymore. The last time I was shocked by a story was the death of former Alcorn State and Tennessee Titian quarterback Steve McNair.

McNair lost his life in a murder/suicide with is mistress Sahel Kazemi. The death of McNair once again showed just how little we know about athletes off the field.

There are few athletes that would surprise me if they were involved in a scandal. One that comes to mind is former Florida Gators and Denver Broncos quarterback Tim Tebow.

Tebow, no matter how you feel about certain aspects of his life, has been a model citizen in college and so far in the NFL. The young man has never been arrested or in any other type of trouble.

All Tebow did while in college was earn a degree and stay out of trouble. I would take 100 Tebows over half the other guys who have run afoul of the law.

I just do not know about Favre and this story. One could question a million things about the story but the truth no matter what it is hopefully will come to light.

This story like countless others just show us, as fans and media, just how little we truly know about the athletes we look up too and write about.

Feel free to come to your own conclusions but be careful because until the truth comes out, one side just got fooled again.

Even the timing of the story, has me wondering. Favre plays the Jets and this story comes the week of the game. I wonder how long they sat on it, just so it would run the same week as this matchup. Too many questions but not enough answers for my liking.

I lived in Milwaukee when Favre played for the Packers, and it was widely understood that he was a sleaze. I have to admit that I have no first-hand evidence, but there was a club downtown that he frequented. People said that he chased after anything with a skirt and a pulse. Some of the stories are too graphic to repeat here. So while this may be the first time a story like this has surfaced in the media, people in Wisconsin will not be surprised at all.

@ Brian I am not saying your wrong but if it was true someone would have spoken out about Favre when he left Green Bay. We see this all the time when an athlete leaves from some place. Look at what happened in Cleveland when LeBron James left. Stories about him popped up everywhere. While he was in Cleveland those writers protected him and once he left, they felt no need to protect him anymore. Case in point, LeBron had the Cleveland media kill a story about a teammate and his mother. LeBron even got ESPN to kill the story. But back to Favre, if he was such a skirt chaser after he left the media in Green Bay would have killed him if they had proof. Again I am not saying your wrong but it is funny to me that a guy plays 16 years in the NFL in one place and we hear nothing. Then he goes to New York for a year and this story breaks two years later? It just seems made up. But athletes have fooled us before.

I think he's more concerned about his family life than the sexual harrassment allegations. I just have a hard time believing Brett Favre would send graphic pictures of himself to a woman that has no kind of interest in him, when he can almost pull any kind of woman he wants. Ladd I stress the word "ALMOST" before you cuss me out for being a chauvinist pig. Just to big of a risk in my opinion.

You have a point, but an absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. The difference between this story and mere rumors is that this is sexual harassment, which is illegal. That's what makes it newsworthy. Favre hitting on girls at bars is not something most media are going to cover. And people in Wisconsin never felt the bitterness toward Favre that folks in Cleveland feel toward James. Given the small media market in Wisconsin, and the relatively late development of media blogging there, it is hardly surprising that stories about Favre never came out. It's not like the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel was going to report on them. I did see one first-hand report of Favre's sleaziness, though it was from a right-wing kook. Or does that enhance its credibility? When I was in grad school at the University of Wisconsin, first getting my law degree and then my MBA, I saw Favre getting oral sex from some ho (not the babymama of his grandbabymama) in the back of a Madison, Wisconsin bar, as I headed to the restroom. I’d heard rumors that this was de rigeur for this indecent bumpkin with a large wallet and gridiron stardom. This is the kind of guy he is. Obviously, I find Schlussel to be odious, but don't be surprised if more and more of these stories percolate to the surface. And don't forget that a massage therapist has made similar charges. Maybe we'll learn more from the investigation. But my guess is that these stories are true.

I know one easy way to tell. Get the pictures and tell him to drop his pants. End of story. Funny Story: The Man told this whole Favre incident story at work in the break room (texts, pics of, er, ORGANS, etc) on Monday and about thirty minutes later he heard one of our volunteers (a 70-year-old woman) quietly ask someone else that was in the room, "Now what website did (The Man) say those pictures were on?" HA! Go girl!

If not, I know a job I'm applying for in the morning....Did you know the FBI stopped excluding drug users from their recruitments because they couldn't find enough people who hadn't smoked pot at least once? Not saying I AM...just saying I think its hysterical they finally were like, "Well, hell, we can't find a DAMN PERSON to hire in this country including the past three presidents." "Special Agent In Charge Of Penis Identification Garrott" Has a ring to it. Or a head, either one...

These old players just ain't ready for the fallout from this new technology. Ace averred he should have sent a more impressive package and the woman wouldn't have gotten angry and turned him in to the Jets and authorities. My partners, Big Baller and Shot Caller, interjected that if drug users can use somebody else's urine to pass a test, why can't an old player (dual meaning) use somebody else's package to make a better impression. And fellows you know she showed the pictures to her friends and they threw a party laughing before turning him in. Why not just return the text messages and pictures and simply say stop playing. At least she didn't go to Gloria "See Red" Allred and claim to be devastated until big money made her well. I'm hopeful Bret will be able to show the pictures to the wife and convince her it isn't his skyscraper. I wish him the best, he's a Mississippi football legend, and arguably the best quarterback to ever play in the NFL.

I think both of you have listened to too much Alanis Morissette. I fail to see anything strange about Jenn hiring a lawyer and being reluctant to talk to the NFL. It seems she hired a lawyer on the advice of her manager. There are real risks to her in this. She is smart to get legal advice. Favre undoubtedly has a lawyer on retainer. He would be wise to seek his counsel.

I find it hydroponic that Favre has not yet denied the allegations. That does not mean that he did it, of course. But whenever I am falsely accused of sending crotch shots to a coworker, I immediately call a press conference and say, "This is outrageous. I have never done such a thing, and these allegations are nothing but lies!" Just saying.

Sexual harrassment is a serious thing and should not be kept hidden for two years or released to the press by a third party. It makes me wonder when stories are two years late and are paid for. It should make others wonder as well.

Favre is guilty without a doubt. I finally saw a picture of the woman. No able bodied man can look at her too long without sending her a text, becoming spellbounded or buying her things. She probably could have gotten a nice apartment and car had she played her cards right. Everything was going well until Favre left New York and he wasn't available for more torture - you know her dancing nearby him with that pretty smile and other assets the Lawd and some good doctor so ably endowed her with. Favre left before she could completely have the chance to work her magic on him, so one day she said, if I can't cash in, I'll just turn him in. One of my New York friends who used to go to the games just to look at her says she used to do all her routines as nearby to Favre as she could. And she always performed energetic and sensual routines while smiling at Favre. How many men with money or power can resist trying to make a pass at her. A woman who knows how to work it can make a president forget he's the president, a weak minister (Swaggart) forget he's a minister and a federal judge forget he's a judge and supposedly a guardian of the law. A stripper just recently caused a federal judge to use cocaine, carry weapons and buy drugs. I won't even tell you what a beautiful woman can make a football player do. I wonder why so many professional players are broke as soon as they stop playing sport. Women could take over the world if they so had the notion.

Bryan, I am a little puzzled by your fierce defense of Favre. The facts in themselves do not seem sufficient to motivate such enthusiasm. I have to admit that I have been just as fierce in questioning his credibility. To show that I am sincere, I will list the three biases that lead me to believe he is guilty: A) As long as any engram in my mind has been associated with Favre, I have heard that he is a sleazy womanizer. That is a result of living in Wisconsin. B) He has blown so many otherwise awesome games through thoughtless interceptions, that the wounded fan in me wants to throw him to the wolves. Rationally, I believe the charges are credible. Emotionally, he has to pay for those interceptions. C) The description of him wearing Crocs while masturbating seems too incredible to have been invented. And we all know how popular Crocs are in the South. If this allegation is fabricated, the fabricator is a genius. Your turn.

Brian and Bryan- What does it even matter if Favre sent her text and pictures anyway? Does it have anything to do with him playing football? Seems if Jenn(she is the original Fla State Cowgirl who has made her living since she was a Soph in college showing off and bouncing her man-made boobs on tv at footballl games while wearing as little clothes as legally possible) had really minded the text or pics she would have spoke up a long time now.

Brian C Johnson, I am not defending Favre, I am just laying out the facts that should make everyone wonder about a story. A story that is paid for, and comes from a third party should be looked at carefully. As for as your list: A) This would be the first instance for Favre since he married his wife 14 years ago that stepped out on his marrage. And hearing a rumor and it being true are two differnt things. B) Wow, I feel bad for your kids when they let you down one day. No Christmas around your house that year. I will send you a box of tissues just so you feel better. C) True Back at you.

You see that Favre's relentless campaign of interceptions continues. Bryan, I asked you to confess your biases, but you only commented on mine. All you had to say was that you want to give the benefit of the doubt to a native son. In the absence of such an admission, we are left to wonder. Are you tennis partners with Virginia Thomas? Did Favre send you Croc shots and now you realize it was nothing special? We may never know the answers to these questions. But to return to facts, people who are not familiar with the story may not understand why you keep saying that Favre has never cheated on his wife since they were married. First, you should actually say that he has not cheated on his wife since they were married so far as we know. What we do know is that Favre did cheat on Deanna before they were married, when they lived together and already had a child together. That is from her autobiography. So if he did try to step out in 2008, it would hardly be out of character. Now, we get news that Favre has admitted to sending Sterger voicemails, though he did not admit to sending pictures. But his admission seems to fatally damage your argument. That is, we don't know whether Favre has described the content of the voicemails. But what reason could he have had for calling Sterger unless it was to seek some kind of relationship with her? I hope you're not going to tell me that there is probably a perfectly innocent explanation for why he kept calling this former Playboy Playmate outside of work. One presumes that Mrs. Favre knows better. Does it not seem likely that Favre pursued some kind of an inappropriate relationship with Sterger? If that is the case, is it not easier to believe that he slipped on some Crocs and attempted the rush?

I saw the commercial, Bryan. I don't know what to call that. We were having lunch today and one of the ladies started talking about how dating used to occur with the man asking the woman for a date, picking up up, giving her roses, opening the car door, going to a nice dinner and not even expecting anything in return for a while. I replied "Bret Favre says you don't have to do all of that anymore, just send her a text message and some pictures." Well, it didn't work in Bret's latest public case we know about, but what about all the others we don't know about. These young G's are something to behold. One of my favorites come-ons of all times was when the young rapper said to the woman, "you're a fine b____ " and she said in return "thank you, you ugly bastard" and walked away. Surely, he thought her uppity to not have sense enough to accept such a high compliment. If it wasn't Favre's teletube? I wonder whose teletube he has a picture of, and why is he sending somebody's other than his. Well, I don't claim to be an expert on football or players.

I'm a little confused by Walt's comments above. As I understand it, Jenn Sterger was employed by the Jets as a gameday hostess on the sidelines, where she intereacted with the crowd and did on camera work. Walt seems to think Jenn was some kind of dancer who did sexy routines aimed at Brett. I have no doubt that Ms. Sterger's past, and probably future, employment record contains time spent dancing (with and without a pole), but I don't think that's what she was doing for the Jets. I don't know who his "New York friend" who attended Jets games "just to watch her" was watching, but if it was a dancer, I don't think it was Jenn Sterger.

Breaking news: The Minnesota Vikings have fired Brad Childress and named Leslie Frazier to interim coach. This after another blowout loss, this time to the Green Bay Packers. The loss pretty much ends Brett Favre's playoff hopes for 2010 and his career. Childress had been on the "hot seat" after making several public remarks about Favre and waiving Randy Moss without talking to Viking's ownership.

@ Bryan Ahhhhhhh, it is high time for the coaching carasoul to begin - pretty much all your teams are 10 games into the season and two have received the boot - Wade Phillips and now Brad Childress The 49ers are 3-7 The Browns are 3-7 The Bengals are 2-8 The Lions are 2-8 The Panthers are 1-9 Even the Dolphins and Titans are questionable at 5-5, How much longer do the Titans keep Fisher and do the Dolphins want to stick with Sporano after Parcells collected the last check and left town? The Bengals are 2-8, but Mike Brown likes Marvin Lewis - however 2-8 is 2-8 and I don't see Mike Brown giving up the GM title due to his pride. Jeff Fisher is another long term coach that has done wonders for the Oiler/Titan organization, with that said - when do you finally say the magic isn't there anymore? The only person I see getting a pass would be Jim Schwartz - with the way he has them playing and the last 2 drafts he has stringed together, you have to give him time to fix all those years of Bad Drafts under Matt Millen. Mangini - bless his heart, but he totally blew up a half descent roster to bring in "his kind of guys" - when you get rid of playmakers like Kellen Winslow, Braylon Edwards, Kameron Wimbley, you are definately starting all over from scratch with a team that has been dead in a football starved city - you have no room for error. But things will get more interesting in the next 7 weeks.

@ Duan C., Here is how I see it: NFC East: Every coach now that Wade Phillips has been fired is safe. Andy Reid and Tom Coughlin will get into the playoffs and Mike Shannan will get a second year. NFC North: Every coach is nearly safe now that Brad Childress is gone. Jim Schwartz has done a great job and the Lions will be a playoff team next season, with or without Matthew Stafford, write it down. Mike McCarthy will be fine but Lovie Smith needs to finish strong and make the playoffs to keep his job. A choke late in the season would mean Lovie is out. NFC South: Sean Peyton could commit murder and he would be safe in New Orleans. Mike Smith has Atlanta poised to be the team to beat in the division. Raheem Morris has made a quick turn around and even if the Bucs miss the playoffs he is safe. That leaves John Fox, who has done a great job but will get the ax at the end of the season. NFC West: The 49ers will fire Mike Singletary. Pete Carroll will get a second season in Seattle and will stay until the USC sanctions are over then jump ship. Steve Spagnuolo will get a third season in St. Louis and has the team in the right direction. Ken Whisenhunt won't get fired this season but must show improvement next season. AFC East: Chan Gailey has the Bills playing hard each and every week. His reward is a two game winning streak, no way he does not get to year two. Tony Sporano got saved when he lost his top two quarterbacks in the same game two weeks ago. Next season will be his make or break year. Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick are safe no matter what. AFC North: Mike Tomlin is a lock to be safe unless this team has more off the field problems that land on his doorstep for lack of control. John Harbaugh is safe as well. Marvin Lewis has to go. You cannot blow a 31-14 first half lead to the Buffalo Bills and keep your job. You just can't. Eric Mangini is safe unless Mike Holmgren wants to be coach and GM. Magini has the Browns playing hard each week and that is worth something. AFC South: Tennessee will see either Vince Young or Jeff Fisher go this season. There is no way owner Bud Adams can keep both. The relationship has been damaged too much. Since owners normally do not fire players, look for Fisher to get the ax. Jack Del Rio is in make or break year in Jacksonville. The only thing that would save him is the buyout clause in his contract. The Jaguars owners are too cheap to pay two coaches, the fired one and then the newly hired one. It will be interesting to see what the Colt do with Jim Caldwell. How offten do you see a coach get wacked after a Super Bowl loss meltdown the next season. Injuries this season should keep Caldwell in a job, but if Peyton isn't happy heads will roll. That leaves us with Gary Kubiak in Houston. If the Texans miss the playoffs he is gone. No questions asked. Expectations for this team were too high to keep him. NFC West: Only one coach is safe and that coach is Todd Haley of the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chargers could get rid of Norv Turner if this team does not continue to rally for a playoff spot. Josh McDaniels could be on the chopping block if the Broncos do not at least sniff the playoffs. Childress needed firing for kissing Favre booty. Who are the Steelers playing in the Super Bowl, though?

Anybody know why that dude clocked Big Ole Bad Ole Ben? I have to admit cheering this one on even though I'm usually a non-violent kind of gal.

@ Donna Ladd, If reports are to be believed, Richard Seymour said this: Seymour said Sunday he was confused by Roethlisberger approaching him after the score. "I'm not sure why he [Roethlisberger] ran up on me. I just turned around and it was a natural reaction," Seymour told media after the 35-3 loss. Roethlisberger has not said why he ran up to Seymour or what he said. It is always hurts when your getting spanked on the field but to have a quarterback of all people come up and jibber jabber after throwing a touchdowns does spark a lot more anger. I will give Roethlisberger credit. I have not seen a flop that good since the World Cup ended in July.

I pretty much agree, for the most part, on the coaching jobs. I do believe McDaniels has played his way out in Denver. I do believe Turner is safe, but then again, Schottenheimer was fired after going 14-2 and lost in the playoffs in his last season in San Diego. The only other firings that I see as a sure thing is John Fox at Carolina, Marvin Lewis at Cincinnati and Kubiak at Houston. I get the feeling Singletary will get one more year in San Fran. You see Jeff Fisher fired? I don't. I do believe Vince Young may've played his last game as a starting QB for the Titans, if not being let go all together (which I think will actually happen).

@ Golden Eagle, Fisher will be fired. Bud Adams, Titans owner, is a Vince Young fan and has already said the two will have to find a way to work together. If Fisher balks at that idea, which one has to believe he has since he barred Young from the Titans meetings yesterday, he will not get to finish out the final year of his contract with the team. I could be wrong but from past situations it is coaches who get fired and not players.

Queen, Big Ben "the lover and football great" is doing just fine. He can still see the defenses, receivers and fine laadies among us. In fact as you know, he got up and continued to walk the dog on the Raiders. We the members of the Steelers' nation, the greatest pro football fans of all times, know that some big cissies jealous of our prowess on the football filed and the bedroom or should I say the bathroom will sucker punch and bad mouth us every chance they get. Queen, you can't pick up 6 rings and trophies without angering members of the hater-ration club.

News is that the NFL is done with their investigation into the Breet Favre/Jenn Sterger cell phonegate. Sterger's lawyers wonders what is taking the NFL so long to make a decision on Favre. The thing he forgets is that his client did not want to speak to the NFL for weeks after the investigation started. Maybe the NFL wants them to wait like they made them wait. Sterger's lawyer also implied that the NFL is waiting for the end of the season and Favre retires before they address the issue. I would not be surprised if that is not true.

Brett Favre did not start an NFL game for the first time since 1992 last night. The quarterback had the longest start streak in history at 297 games. Major news in the NFL since Favre was sitting for the first time in 18 years.

Below is the ruling handed down today by the NFL against Favre: Brett Favre has been fined $50,000 by the NFL for a "failure to cooperate" with the investigation into allegations he sent inappropriate messages and lewd photos to former New York Jets game-day hostess Jenn Sterger. The league said commissioner Roger Goodell "could not conclude" that Favre violated the league's personal conduct policy based on the evidence currently available to him. "The forensic analysis could not establish that Favre sent the objectionable photographs to Sterger," the statement said. "The review found no evidence to contradict the statements of both Favre and Sterger that they never met in person, nor was there anything to suggest that Sterger engaged in any inappropriate conduct." Goodell determined Favre was "not candid in several respects during the investigation resulting in a longer review and additional negative public attention for Favre, Sterger and the NFL," the statement said. The league's investigation began in October and the fine was announced today. The NFL also reviewed media reports that Favre pursued two massage therapists who worked at the Jets' facility in 2008, when Favre played for the team. But the league said that claim could not be substantiated because people with "potentially relevant information" declined to be interviewed or cooperate with investigators. Reaching a conclusion in the case dragged out because of difficulties in setting up interviews with "certain key individuals," the complication of retrieving and reviewing electronic records and Goodell's decision to meet with both Favre and Sterger before reaching a conclusion, the NFL's statement said.

I told y'all Favre was guilty. Besides if a woman can be naturally or artificially enhanced, put on a tight fitting shirt, and say look at these babies; why can't Favre send a text message and photographs saying check out what I'm working with and give me a call? The League spared Favre and decided to let him retire with dignity. The League told him privately to go away for good after the season. Finally, he will retire from football. He'll keep sending text message thought until Mrs. Favre goes Elen Woods on him. Old dogs learn very slowly.
