The turnout for Belhaven Park's outdoor movie for the month of May, a showing of 1961's "Blue Hawaii," was modest but spirited. In a soundscape of evening birdcalls and slow-passing traffic, locals converged on Belhaven Park just before dusk. Nestled in the heart of their neighborhood, the small park is the perfect location for friends and families to gather in an urban, green space.
"Blue Hawaii" began as the sun set, with Elvis Presley's soft, crooning theme song mixing with the low hum of neighborhood comings and goings. As twilight deepened, the residental scenery was gradually replaced by film projected on the theatre-sized screen.
This month's outdoor movie will be June 11, featuring Mary Poppins and her endless bag of tricks.
