JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi legislative leaders could propose raising most sales taxes from 7 percent to 9 percent in a plan to increase road and bridge funding.

It would remove most or all grocery sales taxes.

House Transportation Committee Chairman Charles Busby says he's considering a sales tax increase but wouldn't provide further details. He could introduce a bill Thursday.

Senate Transportation Committee Chairman Willie Simmons says Busby told him the House plan would remove the current 18-cent tax on fuel and replace it with a 10 percent sales tax. The fuel tax would have 20-cent floor and 30-cent ceiling.

Russ Latino, who leads Mississippi's chapter of the anti-tax Americans for Prosperity, says the plan could cut some income and business franchise taxes, as lawmakers discussed earlier, but could raise corporate income taxes.
