'Hope' and 'Change' Define Mayoral Campaigns

Before Jonathan Lee arrived to his election night party at the Penguin restaurant in west Jackson, local stations were already declaring him the victor in the Democratic primary race for the next mayor of Jackson over second-place runner up Ward 2 Councilman Chokwe Lumumba and three-term incumbent Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr., who finished third.

Persons of the Day: Lee Vance & Juan Cloy

Today, Mayor Tony Yarber announced the two finalists for the top job at the Jackson Police Department: Lee Vance, a longtime assistant chief who is now serving as acting chief; and Juan Cloy, the assistant police chief in Canton. Cloy is the former head of the police union at JPD.

Mississippi lawmakers voted Monday to borrow $450 million for a range of needs. As usual, there's very little for the city of Jackson's legislative agenda, which included funding for public-safety, payment-in-lieu of taxes for state buildings and other requests.
