So, Does This Mean Bennett Will Walk?
So, it is possible that Mayor Frank Melton has fibbed againthis time about the suspect in the Memorial Day shooting confessing to him on tape. The D.A. doesn't have the tape, the detective doesn't have the tape, and an old police friend of Melton'swhom Melton said he gave it towon't confirm or deny whether he did. WTF? The bigger question this should raise for people is how many of the men who have "turned themselves in" to Melton over the years have ended up going free? And is that why they do itbecause they know the track record might help them? We've reported numerous cases in which these men have gone free, and we have questioned why media in the past allowed Melton to pit them against the JPD when they complained about him and his cop friends "bringing in" certain criminals.
South by Southwest - The Morning After
After my last post yesterday, I skipped the coffee and headed straight downtown. Asobi Seksu was playing in a narrow, but thankfully shaded courtyard, and after waiting patiently at the bar door next to the stage, I found a spot only a couple of feet from the band.

The Mississippi Academy of Ancient Music brings back the 17th-century dueling harpsichords with John Paul and Shawn Leopard Thursday, Feb. 19, in the St. James Episcopal sanctuary at 3921 Oak Ridge in Fondren. These are two of the most accomplished piano/harpsichord/keyboard players in the state, so it's always a treat to hear them perform on rarely heard harpsichords.

Truth in Barbecue
One of my favorite college professors, Lee Rackstraw of Booneville, once told me, "If a restaurant doesn't have enough respect for the art of smoking meat to advertise EITHER proper spelling of the word: Barbeque or Barbecue, then I don't bother to stop by and see if it's good or not. BBQ doesn't spell anything!" Well, Spooney's spells out the word BARBEQUE and does a respectable job of smoking of meats on the grill.
The Freest Man Behind Bars
"For a man to act himself, he must be perfectly free; otherwise he is in danger of losing all sense of responsibility or of self-respect."

Three things are guaranteed to make a spring weekend even better: beer, crawfish and rock 'n' roll, all of which you can find at this weekend's Miller Lite Crawfish Boil at the Coliseum Fairgrounds. The rain-or-shine event brings big-name rockers Live, Staind, Three Days Grace, Puddle of Mudd and P.O.D. to Jackson, along with local up-and-comers Absence of Concern and many others. More Than A Pharmacy
The 1920s were a high time for the booming capital city. Jacksonians flocked to the Majestic on Capitol Street to see Douglas Fairbanks in "The Thief of Baghdad," and the Lamar Life Insurance Building (where Eudora Welty's father served as vice president) loomed overhead as the city's first "skyscraper." In beautiful Smith Park there were picnics and evening concerts. If you needed a prescription filled, you would go to Cain's Pharmacy on Fortification Street in the heart of the Belhaven business district. By the 1950s, however, a grocery story had swallowed up the storied pharmacy.
