A Football Feast
Mississippi's greatest football weekend is upon us: The MHSAA championships on Friday and Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium. This year, Mississippi ETV is going to broadcast all five games. But Dr. S says you owe it to yourself to see at least one game in person.
Ole Miss Legend Vaught Dies
John Vaught, the man who built a football dynasty at Ole Miss in 25 seasons as head coach, died on Friday night. He was 96. Vaught, who led the Rebels to six SEC titles, was to Ole Miss football what Bear Bryant was to Alabama football, and none of his successors has been able to live up to his legacy.
Rose Bowl Updates
The Rose Bowl just started. It's supposed to be a big game, apparently. Anyway, you can get some offbeat updates at Every Day Should Be Saturday or Fox Sports. And as Deadspin says, thank goodness no woman related to a Longhorn is dating a Trojan. We got enough of that during the Fiesta Bowl.
Rebels Add Assistants
The unemployment stats in the Miami area just went down. Ole Miss Ed Orgeron landed two new assistants on Monday, both of them former Miami assistants. Dan Werner is the Rebels' new offensive coordinator and Art Kehoe will be the new offensive line coach. Also, quarterback/fullback Robert Lane announced he's coming back next season and will play wherever the Rebels need him.

Microcosm of an Industry
The Be-Bop sign still hangs prominently in Maywood Mart, but the shelves inside are empty. Be-Bop Record Shop was once the largest record store chain in Mississippi, but the last Be-Bop location, in Maywood Mart, closed in April.
Two Pearl Police Officers Injured, One Killed
Three Pearl police officers were shot, leaving one dead and two injured, while they served a search warrant in building 25 of Colony Park Apartments Tuesday. Investigator Michael T. "Mike" Walter died at 11:56 a.m. at University of Mississippi Medical Center from gunshot wounds.

Ronni Mott Responds to Hood on Hayne
On March 12, 2010, Radley Balko, formerly of Reason Magazine, published an email from Hood to coroners and others urging them to get legislators to vote against H.B. 1456. The bill, signed March 19 by Gov. Haley Barbour, requires that anyone hired by a Mississippi county to do an autopsy be American Board of Pathology certified in forensic pathology.

Mississippi, we have a problem. Governmental bodies and agencies from right here in Jackson (city, JPS and JPD) all the way up through state (secretary of state's office) have a really bad habit of trying to hide public information from you the taxpayer, or at least delaying it.
