Why Polls Drive Us Crazy
There's a great Alternet story by Joshua Holland that might hit the spot for those of you (us) cringing over small movements in the national polls this election cycle. It may not completely settle your racing heart -- nothing will until there's an election (followed by a scandal, a recount and hand-ringing over the failures of our electronic voting system) -- but there's a money quote or two worth reading:
City Targets Upper Level, Again
City officials are in Hinds County Chancery Court trying to shut down the Upper Level Bar & Grill today. Police Chief Malcolm McMillin and Jackson Mayor Frank Melton say the club needs to be closed as a public nuisance because of the business' proximity to shootings and other forms of crime in the area. The city is seeking a permanent injunction to close the club.
Pistorius Granted Bail
Oscar Pistorius was granted bail Friday, paving the way for him to be freed from custody pending his trial in the Valentine's Day shooting death of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Think Equal
Here's a great ad on marriage equality for same-sex couples:
A clear majority of Americans support civil unions, and an equal majority oppose same-sex marriage. I am absolutely sure that this is because most heterosexuals simply have no idea just how much of a difference there is between the two relationships, in legal terms.
Democratic ‘Shadow' Groups Face Scrutiny
The Washington Post reports: "Leading campaign finance watchdog organizations as well as Republican activists intend to challenge the new 'shadow' Democratic Party -- a network of independent groups gearing up to spend as much as $300 million on voter mobilization and pro-Democratic TV ads. The organizations -- the Center for Responsive Politics, the Campaign Legal Center and Democracy 21 -- contend that the pro-Democratic groups are violating prohibitions on the use of corporate and labor money for partisan voter registration and mobilization drives. Trevor Potter, chairman of the Campaign Legal Center, said the groups have become 'the new soft money loophole. . . . This is the beginning of an important discussion about how these groups are going to operate.'" ... Harold Ickes, who runs the pro-Democratic Media Fund, contended the Republican and watchdog critics are "one, trying to tie us up; two, divert our attention; three, force us to spend money on legal fees rather than electoral activities; and four, to try to chill our contributors."
Hmm…I Got to Thinking, And…
Youth Media Project
I can't believe I missed the date. Since April 4, it has been two full years since that Friday in 10th grade when we drove home and discovered that a tree had smashed into our house. Our house. Well, not really our house since it was temporary for us, but still.
[Drink] Dead Guy Ale
The word rogue brings many images to mind. When considering myself, for instance, I am roguishly handsome and roguishly charming. For beer drinkers, the word rogue brings to mind Rogue brewers, based in Oregon. Rogue exclusively produces ale, which is darker and more full than its lighter, crisper cousin the lager. I sat down, living dangerously without a coaster to sample two of Rogue's brews, Saint Rogue Red Ale and Rogue Dead Guy Ale.

Special Interests Meet a Football Atmosphere
OXFORDAnyone curious about the feel of the University of Mississippi campus just hours before the debate should take a stroll on The Walk of Champions, the path normally traversed by the football team when they march through The Grove to hopeful victory at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium. Without a doubt, it feels like a football weekend; the crowds gathering in tents throughout the tree-dotted landscape, musicians performing on the Grove stage, the din of excitement in the air. You can feel it.
Delta Democrat Times: Perception of safety essential to development
Jackson mayoral candidates' message holds validity for Greenville, as well
The Delta Democrat Times writes:
C-L: No deadline set for naming interim chief
The Ledger reports:
Beer Me Up, Scotty
This St. Patrick's Day, forget the artificially green light beer, and pick up a real Irish beer. The Irish have been brewing beer since at least the 12th century, so you can figure they are good at it. Beer generally falls into one of two categories: lagers and ales. But Irish beer has one more category: stout, or porter.
Athena Protects Her Children
Sunday, I sat, twirling the hair at my right temple around my index finger, until I saw something that startled me. Walking into the room was a young woman wearing the exact blush-colored, silk duponi ruffle-neck dress with subtle box pleating at the waist I was wearing. My heart stopped. This had never happened to me before. My head was spinning. Do I run home and change? Do I hope my styling choices--topping the dress with a signature black cardigan, tossing the blush-colored sash and opting to wear a black rhinestone-buckled belt and Betsey Johnson Athena pumps--are enough to differentiate the two of us? This had never happened to me before. I've heard of this horror story happening to others, and I felt bad for them. But I never made a plan for what I'd do if it were to happen to me. Athena helped me save face, but be still my heart if that ever happens to me again.
