The city just issued this verbatim statement:

Motorists are urged to proceed with caution in the areas where trees are down and residents should stay away from any downed power lines. Motorists should treat intersections where traffic lights are out as a 4-way stop.

Democrats Launch Voter Hotline

The Mississippi Democratic Party has launched a voter hotline for citizens who experience any problems at the polls today. The number is 1-800-311-VOTE.

Mississippi Special Session Starts Friday

It's official: Gov. Haley Barbour has called state lawmakers back to Jackson for another special session to deal with the 2010 state budget. The session begins on Friday, July 10, at 10 a.m.

Jackson Crime Stats for Mar. 9-15

Data for this week will be available Wednesday, Mar. 25.

Major crimes in Jackson increased slightly for the second week in a row from Mar. 9 through Mar. 15, although the city saw a decrease in violent crime from the previous week. According to the Jackson Police Department's weekly crime statistics report (PDF), property crimes increased 27 percent, largely on the strength of an increase in auto burglaries, especially in Precinct 4, which covers Northeast Jackson. Violent crime decreased in every precinct except Precinct 1, which serves South Jackson.

Budget Shortfalls Greater than Anticipated

Mississippi Legislators are on their way back to Jackson to begin the extended 2009 session that kicks off tomorrow. Topic No. 1 on the agenda is the state's budget for 2010.

With the state unemployment rate at 10.5 percent, Les Range, newly appointed executive director of the Mississippi Department of Employment Security, has his work cut out for him.

Gambling Revenue Up Again

The Mississippi State Tax Commission says that winnings in the state's 30 casinos was up in May by $19.2 million more than in April, according to Forbes, but revenues are still below the May 2008 earnings. The casinos took in $224.3 million last month, which is about $11.4 million less than the same month last year.

Bomb Threat Aimed at Courthouse

The Hinds County courthouse is back in business after an alleged bomb threat this morning. The Hinds County Sheriff's Department emptied the courthouse about 8:30 this morning at the news of the threat.

Jackson Crime Down In Late February

Jackson enjoyed a slight decrease in major crimes at the end of February, according to Jackson Police Department data released last week. The JPD report (PDF) on major crimes for the week of Feb. 23 through Mar. 1 shows a 23 percent decrease in major crimes from the previous week and a 16 percent drop from the same period last year. Violent crimes increased 50 percent from the previous week, from 14 to 21 incidents, due to a spike in armed robberies in Precincts 2 and 3, but the overall rate was still a decrease from this time last year.

‘It's About Ethics'

Democratic Insurance Commissioner candidate Gary Anderson signed a statement Monday pledging to refuse contributions from any insurance company, insurance company PAC or insurance company executive or corporate officer.

FBI Raids Barbour Niece

Gov. Haley Barbour's niece continues to be the object of federal scrutiny over Hurricane Katrina contracts. Last Thursday, FBI agents raided the Mississippi office of Alcatec LLC, owned by Rosemary Barbour. Rosemary Barbour is married to Hinds County Superintendent Charles Barbour, who is Haley Barbour's nephew.
