When I first became obsessed with learning all I could about wine, I subscribed to Wine Spectator, the premier publication on wines in the U.S. The problem was that I hardly read it, and when I did, I was often annoyed. Sometimes, Wine Spectator is like a private men's club that requires a secret knock to enter. Granted, some of the wines on their "Top 100" are affordable. I'm screwed. Really. Maybe it's because I constantly overwork my entire population of peasants into revolt, or because I flip a coin to decide if I execute the enemy officers, but I just know there's some list down there with my name on it. But at least I'm going in style. Damning yourself to eternal suffering has never been so enjoyable as it is with "Romance of the Three Kingdoms X." ROTKX is a strategy game set in ancient China, where the player takes control of a officer in the history of that time period. All the original officers are real people from history, taken from the novel by Luo Guanzhong. But if you'd like, you can create your own, chosen from a wide variety of stats and traits.

[Geek] Everything Old Is New Again

There have been many comic eras—the Golden Age, the Silver Age, the Bronze Age and the Grim/Gritty Age. Currently (in what is called, funny enough, the Modern Age) comics are going through a "rebirth" of sorts. Old characters and teams are being retooled and reintroduced for the 21st-century generation of comic readers. One of these teams is "The Avengers."

Keegan's, 7049 Old Canton Road, behind Brookshires on Lake Harbor, (898-4554) began serving their lunch buffet about four weeks ago, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. There's soup, salad, meats, vegetables and breads. All-you-can-eat lunch buffet is $7.95, while soup and salad is $5.95. Drinks are extra.

Beyond the Sea

"BioShock" is banned from Valve Studios. The team behind the legendary first-person shooter "Half-Life" has declared that none of its employees is allowed to touch the game. Managing Director Gabe Newell explained to computerandgames.com: "Nobody gets to play it until Orange Box is done—that's our reward to ourselves as a company; everyone gets a copy of 'BioShock." When Valve openly praises another company's FPS, it becomes clear that something has gone very, very right.

Gadgets of The Week [08.23.06]

I'm partial to mobile phones with QWERTY keyboards—and the fuller the keyboard the better. (That's why, although I've recently said I was switching from a Blackberry to a Treo, I've still got the Blackberry activated; I've got the Treo on my desk—I pick it up and fondle it occasionally—but I'm just not a fan of its keyboard.) The most important reason for having a full keyboard on your phone is because it makes you look more businesslike than typing using that look-ahead stuff on a typical numbered keypad. And looking busy can be extremely important for college students, dontcha know.

Mother's Day Traditions

Each and every year for Mother's Day my mother and I go to church together, and afterward we go to a spa and get our nails and feet done. That evening, I take my younger siblings out so she can have the night to herself, relaxing and doing whatever it is that she wants to do.
