Wired Bloggers Picking Apart Jackson Spycopter
After the JFP's Adam Lynch wrote the only article that actually raised questions about Jackson's new helicopter, apparently purchased by Jim Barksdale and flown by his business partner's son, Coyt Bailey, a Wired magazine blogger picked up our story. Now, the citizen journalists over there are picking it apart, raising some very intriguing questions. Be sure to note the FAA regulations that they're discussing. Please post any comments under Adam's original story so the Wired bloggers can see them, too.
Health & Wellness Info Needed on Jackpedia!
To help the JFP prepare for our upcoming fall wellness issue (out Oct. 11), we're asking readers and wellness practitioners to post information on Jackpedia that will help JFP readers live more healthy and productive lives. In that issue, we will pull wellness listings from Jackpedia to feature in the paper. The way to be considered for inclusion is for practitioners, healthy restaurants, health clubs, doctors, etc., to register at Jackpedia and post info about your wellness service/business, or for readers to offer suggestions about wellness sources/ideas that have helped you.

So, what are YOU wearing to the Chick Ball!?!
What's a Chick to do? Go shoppping ... but where? Thoughts?
OK, this is on my mind this week. The JFP Chick Ball—aka The Grrl Jam—is coming together fabulously; we expect throngs of people Thursday night; we have dozens and dozens of door prizes to give away; the music rocks; I can't wait to bid on art—but my big problem is what to wear. Hey, I'm a girl. It needs to be shiny. It needs to be sleek. It needs to be worthy.
Shantih: A Life and Death in Seven Movements
"Shantih: A Life and Death in Seven Movements"
For the last two years, Millsaps student Lloyd Bourne has been arranging and composing music for his album "Shantih." The result is a cohesive string of heights and depths, pain and joy, crescendos and lulls. The album is best when you listen to all the pieces in succession, and Bourne, performing under the name Huunter with a group of instrumental musicians, will offer that chance at a live concert at Millsaps' Ford Academic Complex. Admission is $5 at the door, and the proceeds go to Wider Net Missions, an organization that works with inner-city kids, homeowners, Habitat for Humanity and more. E-mail [e-mail missing].

This is simply awful, after everything they're going through already. Associated Press:

Could there possibly be a connection? The possibility of this is under further study.
Donations for Gov. Candidates Keep Trickling In
With all the noise surrounding former Gov. Haley Barbour's pardons, you might be forgiven for missing the final epilogue, if you will, from current Gov. Phil Bryant's election campaign.
Cat Stevens
Cat Stevens, well, Yusuf Islam, has a new CD out. He hasn't put out an album in 28 years (longer than my life!), and really, I just think that's something to celebrate. You can hear a song on NPR right now: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6518827

Mitt Romney would allow abortion in some cases, although his party will not.
McDonald's Customer Survey Scam
[Verbatim from the Attorney General's office] Attorney General Jim Hood warns Mississippi citizens of a fraudulent email circulating in a form that claims to be a McDonalds Customer Satisfaction Survey. The completion of the customer satisfaction survey is not the real purpose of the email. The emails real purpose is to obtain consumers personal information.

In 2-1 Vote, PSC Lets Kemper Move Forward
Voting 2-1 this morning, the Mississippi Public Service Commission agreed to let Mississippi Power Co. continue building a lignite coal plant in Kemper County -- at least for the time being. In 2011, the commission allowed Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Atlanta,Ga.-based Southern Co., revise its price tag for the 582-megawatt internal gasification combined cycle plant from $2.44 billion to $2.8 billion without public input.
Viva La Cell Phone Cameras!
The controversy surrounding the video of Saddam Hussein's hanging holds a lesson for us here in Jackson. You'll notice that while the civilized world is outraged by the way Hussein was hanged, Iraqi officials are more outraged that someone videoed the hanging and thereby exposed their cruel methods. They have vowed to find and prosecute the scoundrels who exposed them to the world! Governments simply hate transparency, for it leads to accountability.
Connecticut High Court Throws Out Gay Marriage Ban
In a 4-3 opinion, the Connecticut Supreme Court threw out that state's gay marriage ban today, making Connecticut the third state in the country that will recognize same-sex marriages. Connecticut already had a same-sex civil unions law, but the state's Supreme Court today ruled that the state could not show sufficient evidence why all marriage rights shouldn't be conferred on same-sex couples.
Poll: Americans Uninformed About Bush, Kerry
AP reports: "If matching presidential candidates to their positions on basic issues were like a 'Jeopardy!' category, most Americans wouldn't earn a single dollar. More than half of those polled by the National Annenberg Election Survey didn't know President Bush alone favors allowing private investments of some Social Security money. Nearly as many didn't know that only Democratic candidate John Kerry proposes getting rid of tax breaks for the overseas profits of U.S. companies. Importing drugs from Canada? That's a Kerry issue, but nearly half either didn't know or thought Bush also supported changing federal law to allow for drug imports from Canada."
