E-mail from Howard Dean
This went to his mailing list just now: "John Kerry and I had a very good meeting yesterday. During the campaign we often focused on what divided us, but the truth is we have much more in common beginning with our fervent desire to send George Bush back to Crawford, Texas in November. The future of our country depends on this.
Minor: Miss. GOP Lying About ‘Highest-Taxed State'
Columnist Bill Minor writes this week: "Bad enough that the chief propagandist for the Mississippi Republican Party is a turncoat Democrat, but worse that he lies to make taxpayers believe they can't afford health care for 65,000 of the state's neediest. State GOP chairman Jim Herring on Mississippi Public Broadcasting's 'Statewide Live' the other night kept repeating the fallacious party line that Mississippi is 'the highest taxed state in the nation.' Absolute hogwash. The facts are that Mississippians are among the nation's most lightly taxed.
Blacks unswayed by GOP social agenda
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution is reporting: "African-Americans often agree with Republicans on social issues: abortion, prayer in schools and --- most significant in this year's presidential race --- same-sex unions. But they vote for Democrats. Ninety percent of black voters supported Democrat Al Gore over George W. Bush four years ago. Those issues don't determine how blacks vote, said University of Maryland political scientist Ron Walters.
Factcheck.org: Kerry's Tax Ad: Literally Accurate, But Misleading
[Verbatim alert] [Kerry's] ad says "the middle class is paying a bigger share of America's tax burden." True. But it's a smaller burden all around. And the richest still pay the most.

Hot Time in the City
It's July, folks, which means that summer is already well on its way. So grab your friends, a breeze-inducing fan (or two), some tasty food and ice-cold libations to reclaim your backyard for a mod, urban grill-out. Because, who are we kidding? There's no way to escape the heat so why not just embrace it? In the summer, in the city...
The Road to Wellness Will Not Be Traveled By Car
As my car coasted into the JFP parking lot two weeks ago, I thought I had ran out of gas. It actually turns out that I need a new car engine, which means I'm out of a car for the time being. The good news? This means I have exceeded my goal of biking to work three times a week. However, it makes getting to the gym more of a challenge. It also makes everything else more of a challenge--from getting to the grocery store to finding ways not to arrive places pouring with sweat.
Wellness Project: Week 1
I've come to the conclusion that instead of the five goals I listed, I should have just had one goal: improve my short-term memory. Why? Because I keep forgetting my goals! My brain is on auto-pilot most days, thinking about obligations for work, school or church, so two or three days will go by before I realize that I haven't done something. I think that I may have to post a checklist on my mirror to remind me of what I am supposed to be doing. I'm distracted on a regular basis, so I hope I don't overlook the checklist! Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can help myself remember to stick to my goals?

Armageddon, Part II
Last year, the Boston Red Sox buried the Curse of the Bambino with an incredible eight-game winning streak. First, they rallied from an 0-3 deficit in the AL Championship Series to oust the hated New York Yankees. Then the BoSox swept the St. Louis Cardinals in the World Series to claim their first championship since the age of the dinosaurs. But the problem with the ULTIMATE season in baseball is that there's no such thing. There's always next season.
