Taiwo and Kehinde Gaynor

Taiwo and Kehinde Gaynor, 26, are twins from Brooklyn, N.Y., who moved to Jackson when Taiwo, then 18, was working with the Algebra Project, a non-profit organization for math literacy in urban neighborhoods. He came to Jackson for a month to help the group design their own education materials. One month turned into a year. He soon convinced his twin brother, Kehinde, to come down, too.

Family Night at the Senators

It's going to be one wild night of hits Friday, May 27, when the Jackson Convention & Visitors Bureau kicks off its summer tourism season at Smith-Wills Stadium. Free to the public, it all begins at 6 p.m. when the gates open and the family fun begins. There will be space jumps, obstacles courses, batting helmets for the first 500 kids, live animals from the Jackson Zoo and the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science, National Child I.D. Kits from the Metro Jackson Crime Stoppers Board, and loads of entertainment! Give-aways from members of the Metro Jackson Attractions Association, a co-sponsor of the event, will be announced after every inning. "Sue the T-Rex" will also make a special appearance, just weeks before the real "Sue" replica arrives for the summer exhibit at the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science on Saturday, June 18. Sue will be joined by Zany Zebra from the Jackson Zoo, which opens its new African Savannah exhibit the following day. The main event begins at 7:05 p.m., when the Jackson Senators play the Shreveport Sports.

Phony Penis Raises Questions

Just when Doctor S thought he had seen it all in sports, along comes Onterrio Smith, the dope-smoking Minnesota Vikings running back. It seems Smith was detained at an airport recently when security found vials of white powder in his carry-on bag along with a prosthetic penis. Turns out the substance was dried, powdered urine for use in The Original Whizzinator. This package, which includes a pump and the aforementioned faux phallus, is used to defeat drug tests. Smith is a two-time loser under the NFL's drug policy. He was suspended for four games in 2004 after testing positive for smoking the tree. If he's caught again, he will be suspended for an entire season. Smith lamely claimed that the Whizzinator belonged to his "cousin." Uh huh. The kit is sold by Puck Technologies in Signal Hill, Calif., and if their Web site can be believed, this phony pee pee is changing lives all over America.

Disc Makers Launches Southeast Independent Music World Series, Atlanta is the new host site for 2005's premier indie showcase. Disc Makers, the nation's leading independent CD manufacturer, is kicking off the latest installment of the Independent Music World Series (IMWS). The premier music showcase series for independent musicians in the country is back to crown one independent Southeast act as the Grand Prize Winner at the showcase finals to take place at Atlanta's Velvet Underground at the Hard Rock Café on Thursday, August 18th. The show will feature the top six independent acts, as selected by Billboard Magazine, showcasing and competing for a Grand Prize of over $35,000 in music gear and prizes.

Charter Schools Cause Shuffle, Get Boost

Mississippi's charter schools got a boost when the Mississippi Senate passed a HB 238 on March 2. Charter schools are independent public schools, cut loose from regulations of a school district, but they are publicly funded and hold to the basic definitions of a public school. They cannot exercise preference in admissions, cannot teach religion and cannot charge tuition.

Tribute to Slain Men Hits Roadblock

At the request of the Philadelphia Coalition, Sen. Gloria Williamson, D-Philadelphia, introduced Senate Bill 2961, which would name Mississippi Hwy. 19 from Philadelphia to Lauderdale County the "Chaney, Goodman and Schwerner Memorial Highway" after the trio that was kidnapped and killed by Klansmen just off that highway on June 21, 1964. However, it looks as though the bill will never be voted on thanks to Sen. Billy Hewes III, R-Gulfport, the chairman of the Senate Highways and Transportation Committee.

On Thursday Rufus McKay, R&B/Blues lead vocalist for The Red Tops will perform with the Ben Shaw Band at the Millsaps Academic Recital Hall at 7:30 p.m. $10, 974-1043. Throughout the '50s and '60s The Red Tops performed at high school proms, and night clubs all over the tri-state area. You can wax nostalgic with beautiful classic Ben E. King inspired ballads and old school rocking R&B with "Swanee River Rock" or "Hello Is That You?"

The WORST of the New South

In the aftermath of the Edgar Ray Killen arrest, the tough-on-crime stalwarts at The Northside Sun fretted over whether the old Klansman can possibly get a fair trial in the state's current "political climate," and seemed very bothered that the climate is changing (presumably for the worse), thus allowing such belated arrests to occur.

Tsunami Benefit Raises $4,311

The JFP-Collective-Rock 93.9 benefit last night at the Red Room at Hal & Mal's has raised $4,311.50 for disaster relief! Hal & Mal's donated 10 percent of sales for the evening. The checks will be mailed to Oxfam late Friday. The event was a raging success. Thanks to the musicians, volunteers, local businesses, artists and all the Jacksonians, young and older, who turned out to make the event such a success. The music was hot, and the community spirit was even hotter. Most of all, we thank JFP intern Swetha Regunathan who spearheaded the event and designer Jakob Clark who made such amazing music come together on one stage for such an important cause in less than a week. Cheers to them, and to Jackson.
