You won't have to look far for activities this Independence Day weekend. Today, start your holiday by celebrating the inauguration of Mayor Harvey Johnson Junior. The activities began early with a prayer service, but the whole town is invited to the inauguration, a reception following and the party tonight, all held at the Jackson Convention Complex, downtown.

BREAKING: Levon Brooks Released

A Noxubee County judge released Levon Brooks on his own recognizance without bond after spending 18 years in prison for the rape and murder of a 3-year-old child. After Noxubee District Attorney Forrest Allgood reviews the case, Brooks will reappear in court in about three weeks, at which point he is fully expected to be exonerated. The judge could not talk specifically about evidence in Brooks' case because it will be used to prosecute Justin Arthur Johnson, who is now charged with the two murders Kennedy Brewer and Brooks served prison sentences for.

Allstate v. Melton

On Aug. 22, Jackson Mayor Frank Melton admitted to Lauderdale County Circuit Court Judge Robert Bailey that he had lied for more than two years about sending a debunked Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics memo to Washington-based Clarion-Ledger reporter Ana Radelat, falsehoods first reported by the Jackson Free Press in July. Plaintiffs in Robert Pierce v. Frank Melton claim the memo prematurely ended the careers of Pierce and Jimmy Saxton, both former pilots at MBN. Incensed, Bailey quickly entered an order three days later striking Melton's pleadings and rendering default judgment for the plaintiffs.

Artiste At Work

For two months the lights at the large, older brick home on Morningside Street in Belhaven Heights burned the night. There's no "artist at work" sign on the outside; however, a peek inside the house reveals organized chaos, with silk batik scarves draped from clotheslines stretched across the length of a spare bedroom/studio, in doorways and on a screened back porch.

Great Americans

Tamaya Daniels sat in the lobby of the new girl's dorm at Tougaloo College, watching the Lakers vs. Pistons game on television. A center for Nottingham High School in Syracuse. N.Y., she was routing for the Pistons because they were the underdog. Six feet tall, Daniels had to stand in the few higher portions of the ceiling in the basement of Slave Haven. She could not stand up straight in the room where thousands of slaves had waited to be taken through the Underground Railroad.

Court Overturns Fulgham Death Sentence

The Mississippi Supreme Court has overturned a death sentence for Kristi Fulgham and ordered a new sentencing hearing for her 2003 murder conviction. The court issued a decision yesterday finding that the trial court erred by preventing a social worker from testifying about Fulgham's background as mitigation evidence.

Hosemann, Hood Push Pre-K Education

Early childhood education is central to safeguarding Mississippi's economic future agreed Republican Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann and Democratic Attorney General Jim Hood in separate speeches today. The two officials' comments, coming during the Mississippi Economic Council's annual Hob Nob event, are indicative of growing, bipartisan support for pre-kindergarten.

Fourth Time's A Charm?

In a session rivaling all others this year in terms of brevity, state lawmakers approved $14 million for Baxter Healthcare in Cleveland July 15 in less than two hours. The money, another installment of a $24 million legislative commitment will allow Baxter to expand its product line and remove the cloud hanging over the heads of the company's almost 800 employees.

Miss. Commissioners Fine Az. Companies $5.7 Million

Mississippi Public Service Commissioners are ordering a pair of companies to pay a record $5.7 million fine for more than 1,000 violations of the state's do-not-call law.

Building a foundation

Today, when I walked into the office of the Jackson Free Press, Sophie showed me the layout for the next issue of the JFP. When I saw all our (the interns) hard work for the past two months come to fruition with a quick perusal of the cover and the articles, my reaction was a mixture of joy, relief, and sorrow. At the beginning of my internship, I never thought that, as an intern, I would be assigned and entrusted with what Donna had described as one of our big summer issues. I was frightened that I would not be able to handle such a monumental task, and I was terrified that I would not be able to give the topic the proper honor it deserves. My fears, however, were immature. With the help and encouragement of the JFP staff and interns, I was able to complete the task at hand, but, more importantly, I was able to believe that I could handle such a project. The JFP was always there to answers my questions even when I was afraid that I was asking too many, and they treated each question with importance and respect. This was the most pertinent aspect of the JFP internship for me. Yes, the sole purpose of an internship is to learn and improve upon your craft, but knowing that the JFP believed in me before I even knew I believed in myself is a policy I believe all internships should adopt.

It's the Weekend

Art House Downtown Cinema brings Jackson independent and interesting films consistently. You have a chance to catch two films, "Blank City" at 7 p.m. and "Heartbeats" at 8:45 p.m. today at Russell C. Jason Isbell made a name for himself as third guitarist for the preeminent southern rock band of this decade, the Drive-By Truckers. While he was with the band, Isbell established himself as arguably their folksiest songwriter. Despite his junior-songwriter status, Isbell's contributions always shone through on the Truckers' albums.
