A Few Jackson Warm and Fuzzies

As the celebratory edition of the Best of Jackson sits on the press as I type, the anticipation of its distribution is at its climax. I must admit this will only be my second edition I will be "aware" of its existence. More on that tomorrow. But the fact that I am aware is a warm and fuzzy.

Gray Signs Contract with JPS

Jackson Public Schools finally has a new superintendent. Dr. Cedrick Gray signed a contract this morning to take over as superintendent effective July 1.

ALERT: Watch Out for This Email Scam

Since I have received this email twice already, I figure that I'd better warn others about it before someone loses a lot of money. Email accounts are being compromised so that this message can be sent:

It's a Great Night in Jackson

August 20, 2009 - Whether you live or work in Jackson, or you've been looking for an excuse to come to town, take the opportunity tonight to get out, meet new people and enjoy yourself. Here's a sampling of the goings on around town tonight.

Haley Barbour v. Oliver Diaz?

Scott Horton has a compelling piece in Harper's magazine right now about the Oliver Diaz case, and whether it was "politically motivated and directed"—and driven by none other than Gov. Haley Barbour.

The New Colin Farrell

I can harldy stop giggling long enough to post this story.

Valentine's Job Cuts Coming to Clarion-Ledger?

As if it hasn't been bloody enough with The Clarion-Ledger—which has cut 25 percent of its positions in the last few months, as well as shrunk news coverage—the Gannett Blog is reporting that more layoffs may be coming to the Gannett Corp.-owned newspapers as soon as early February. Jim Hopkins writes:

VIDEO: Girl in Clinton's "3 A.M." ad an Obama supporter?

You can't make this stuff up.

The young lady, whose first name is Casey, was eight years old in this commercial, which was originally for a railroad. Whoever produced the Clinton ad bought the file footage and used it for her campaign ad. The irony of all of this is that Casey, who is now 17, has been actively campaigning for Obama (she'll be old enough to vote in November), so she was stunned to see herself in Clinton's ad. No foul play here - just plain weird.

Circle of Us Meeting

Although I created an event listing for this, I wanted to highlight this event because I think this group serves an important purpose. More and more African Americans are deciding to wear their hair in its natural state, but challenges such as not knowing how to maintain natural hair, negative feedback from friends and family, finding a hairdresser, etc. can be discouraging. If you fall into any of those categories, I suggest that you come to the meeting and fellowship with others who have natural hair. The ones who have been natural for years or who specialize in styling natural hair may be able to help you. The meeting is May 25, 6 p.m. at Brice Media (6712 Old Canton Road, Suite 6, Ridgeland). You can send an email to {encode="[email protected]" title="[email protected]"} if you have any questions, and the group also has a Facebook page. Hope you can make it!

No Pomp, Lots of Circumstance

Today marks my last day of online classes at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where I've spend the last three years studying graphic design. I won't fly to Pittsburgh next month for the graduation ceremony, but I'll be pleased as punch when my associate's degree arrives in the mail.

The Year in Civil Liberties…and Twisted Sister Performing "O Come All Ye Faithful"

Okay, I haven't done a blatantly self-promotional post in a while--and I've just finished my Greatest Hits feature for 2006, highlighting ten pieces of especially popular (and, presumably, least objectionable) civil liberties content.

Florida GOP Gov Candidate Ducks Bush

My, how things have changed. The political albatross that President Bush has become was yet more apparent today when a Republican candidate for governor ducked an appearance with the president today. This is particularly ironic in the state that put Bush in the White House in the first place.

City Mulls Bond Deal

The City Council and city attorney have thick stacks of documents to review detailing the deal the Jackson Redevelopment Authority worked out to build a convention center hotel.

Lawsuit Alleges Racketeering by ‘Former United State Senator'

Folo's got the poop on a new Wilson v. Scruggs lawsuit—which alleges a conspiracy between Dickie and Zach Scruggs, Ed Peters, Bobby DeLaughter and a "former United States Senator":

Equal Voice for America's Families

An employee of the Mississippi Workers' center for Human Rights invited me the attend a convention in Birmingham this past Saturday called Equal Voice for America's Families, which was sponsored by the Marguerite Casey Foundation. The convention took place simultaneously in Birmingham, Los Angeles and Chicago with a satellite feed connecting all three locations. A total of about 15,000 families participated in the event overall.

ChickBall Performer: Caroline Crawford

Visit Myspace.com/carolinespiano for more info.

Loving and learning the piano as a young teen. Sneaking a radio into her bedroom at night to listen to rock music – which was forbidden in her house. The summers in Seattle training with her music teacher grandfather. Those first public performances at the Kaffeeklatsch in Huntsville Ala. as a nervous 16 year-old. Caroline Crawford is a product of her experience. Crawford has come a long way since the days when her piano-playing was an experience so personal that she shied away from ever performing for others. Tone deaf until her music skills only began burgeoning, her ailment led her parents to at least initially discourage her for pursuing professionally. Now Crawford's haunting voice and piano evokes Tori Amos and Evanescence's Amy Lee. Music is her passion, her conduit of self-expression. "I write about the things I can't always talk about. I take it to the piano and hope I can be open enough to let the lightning come and shock the truth and all the emotion right through my fingertips and my voice."

Benefit for Serenity Lane(Child with Luekemia) Tues. Sept 9th 8pm @ Electric Cowboy

You guys know Im all about the kids!

I was asked by friends of the mother of young Serenity Lane to perform at a benefit on her behalf tomorrow. Im appealing to the entire JFP nation to open your hearts and simply show up! If you have kids as I do, I KNOW each and every one of you would want others to assist you in your time of need. Serenity needs valuable, almost life-saving procedures that cost a LOT of money. Without it, who knows what could happen. It has put upon my heart to appeal to all of you to come and donate to the cause. There will be great entertainment and your cover will go to Serenity's family for here medical expenses. Its THAT important. Ive even put aside my disdain for that damn rebel flag and my personal ban of patronizing any place that flies it to do this. So if I can find the time and heart...YOU CAN TOO.

Devon Desper

On Jan. 5, some of the best high-school football talent descended on Orlando, Fla., for the 2012 Under Armour All-American game. This game started in 2008 under the sponsorship of athletic clothing and shoe company Under Armour. Athletes were showcased to a national television audience, and several even declared their college choice during the game.
