Race Leaves Mark in Mayoral Race

The votes are in for the 2009 Democratic primaries, and the Jackson mayor's race seems to fall along racial lines. Mayoral candidate Marshand Crisler, a Ward 6 councilman, did well in the area of the city containing a large white population, such as Ward 1, while former Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. picked up decent numbers in majority African American areas like Ward 4 and 5.

The Mississippi Writers Guild will hold its sixth annual writers' conference on Aug. 3 and 4 in Jackson. The guild, with the motto "No Writer without a Voice," was established in 2005 and is a charitable organization formed for the purpose of advancing and preserving the literary arts in Mississippi.

Funds Available For Community-Based Lenders

The U.S. Small Business Administration will accept applications starting Feb. 15 for lenders through its Small Loan Advantage program. The agency is also launching its Community Advantage program to increase the number of low-dollar loans for businesses and entrepreneurs in under-served communities.

Scruggs Enters Second Guilty Plea

The Associated Press is reporting that Mississippi attorney Richard "Dickie" Scruggs, who is currently serving a five-year sentence for bribery, has pled to a second charge of mail fraud in connection with a second bribery.

DeLaughter Trial Rescheduled

Federal District Court Judge Glen H. Davidson has granted a motion for continuance to suspended Hinds County Judge Bobby DeLaughter. The trial, originally scheduled to begin April 6, is now set for Aug. 17, 2009.

DeLaughter Requests New Trial Dates

Suspended Hinds County Circuit Court Judge Bobby DeLaughter, arraigned in federal court last month on a five-count indictment, has asked the court to reschedule some upcoming court dates so that his attorney will have adequate time to prepare, according to the Daily Journal.

Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. reported at a late-afternoon press conference that the city's water supply is now up to a sufficient level to supply every resident with water.

Bill Advocates School Bus Ads

In a 94-21 vote last week, Mississippi House members voted to allow advertising on school buses as a measure to offset some of the state's budget belt-tightening, reports The Sun Herald. The bill imposes some restriction on the types of ads that would be allowed. Ads for alcohol, tobacco, junk food, and political and religious causes are banned.
