Midtown Housing Development Breaks Ground

City leaders today celebrated groundbreaking on the first phase of a $3.49 million energy-efficient residential development in Jackson's midtown neighborhood. The Jackson Housing Authority is financing the project through stimulus and other federal funds, which will start with the construction of four duplexes at Livingston and Lamar streets.

A Civil Rights Museum commission appointed by Gov. Haley Barbour approved the location of a planned National Civil Rights Museum, March 11, with a 22-to-9 vote in favor of a controversial site near Tougaloo College. One very conspicuous person missing from the cast of thousands in Jena was Mychal Bell. The 17-year-old, more than any other of the Jena Six teens, fueled the furor over the case. Bell has languished in jail since last December. He's stayed there in part because of the heavy-duty charges against him. The DA claims that several other scrapes with the law helped keep him there. But he's there in bigger part because his family couldn't raise the portion of the $90,000 bond the courts slapped on Bell. For a working-class, black family, in a low-wage small Southern town, this seems like a king's ransom. But as bail goes in felony conviction cases, this is not exorbitant. So why didn't civil-rights leaders, the black celebrities and the marchers that made Bell a cause célèbre and eagerly mugged for the TV cameras pony up the cash to get him out?

Utah Firm to Manage Three State Prisons

A Utah private-prison firm will take over running the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility and two other Mississippi prisons from The GEO Group. Management & Training Corporation, based in Ogden, Utah, will also assume management of East Mississippi Correctional Facility in Meridian and the Marshall County Correctional Facility in Holly Springs.

A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To My 5K

I woke up around five the morning of the big day. Maybe it was nerves, maybe it was what I'd had for dinner, but I had the worst case of indigestion that I can recall. Ever. Eventually, after flopping around in the bed, I ran to the bathroom to rid myself of the problem. I hate to throw up, but it was happening wether I wanted to or not.

Road to @#$%^&* Wellness

Well, it seems I'm on the road to wellness whether I like it or not. I've found a wonderful, wonderful integrative doctor, Dr. Joseph White (of the Optimum Health Institute up near Tougaloo), who has helped me figure out why I've been tired so much (you know, the reasons beyond working 80 hours a week for four years now!). I'll spare you details, but let's say my system is out of balance, and it's making me miserable as a result. And I'm not facing anything life-threatening (thank God), but could be if I don't get my healthy lifestyle back in place.

The Urban Jungle…err…Fondren

I guess the best place to start is the beginning. On my first day, I was nervous and uncertain about my decision to intern at the Jackson Free Press. I did not have much journalism experience, and I was petrified that I was going to make a fool of myself. Unsure of the dress code, on my first day, I decided that I could not go wrong with semi-formal. Walking through the front door, I was greeted with the smiling faces of Sage and Ronnie. This was the auspicious sign for which I was searching telling me that I had made the correct decision.

Releasing Fears

I take back what I wrote two weeks ago about the humidity "not being too bad" here. Every day, I walk for an hour to get some exercise and come home looking like a wet dog with pouffy, crazy hair. But, I love Jackson and have learned to take more risks and feel less inhibited with my fears since I began interning at the JFP three weeks ago.
