Will Work for Horse Shoes
Necessity, goes the cliché, is the mother of invention.
So where do unemployed cowgirls go to find a job? Texas is one obvious answer. And how do cowgirls get to Texas? They ride their horses, of course.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN, GIRL?
Well, I've been here, just not "here" exactly. Let me explain before I get pummeled for not posting anything lately.
Pizza Delivery Man Bursts Into Flames
Don't you know this guy is sitting in the hospital room reading the news and thinking, "I've finally made it."
When a Lame Duck Has to Duck
President Bush made a surprise trip to Iraq, but he got a surprise of his own when an Iraqi journalist threw his shoes at him during a press conference.
Staying Focused
I hope that people aren't getting tired of hearing the familiar stories about teenage mothers and their struggles. Statistics show that teenage pregnancy in America is higher than in any other developed nation. And while the overall rate has declined since 1990, African American females have a higher rate than other ethnic groups. As I was searching the Web for some "inspiration," I found this story helpful.

City Council Votes to Dissolve Relationship with TCI
It's about time. Here at the JFP, we've been writing for years now about the potential minefield that is a relationship with Frank Melton's buddies at Trans Continental Realty (connected to controversial Texas businessman Gene Phillips). No time to rehash now (putting out the second of two issues right now so the staff can take some Christmas time off), but you can see the full archive of our convention-center hotel coverage here: http://www.jfp.ms/hotel. Meantime, we're thrilled to hear that the city is doing what we've long wanted them to do: dissolve that relationship. We know it hasn't been easy since Melton and friends sold TCI the land, but it finally seems to be happening. Sigh of relief. And, yes, we told ya so. (Sorry, couldn't resist. But we did. Years ago.)
Where's Melton's portrait?
Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. appears to be taking his time in hanging a portrait of his predecessor up in City Hall. Part of the delay, however, stems from the fact that the City Council hasn't bothered to hang up Johnson's portrait from his first term.
Paul Newman Succumbs to Cancer
From the Huffington Post:
Did we learn anything from 9/11?
I'm not talking about aviation safety or counterterrorism intelligence. I'm talking about the unity that Americans experienced in the aftermath of that terrible day.
Oops, Another Fake McCain-Palin Debate Ad Slips Through
It's hilarious, though.
OK, this is wacky. For two debates in a row, the McCain campaign has let an ad praising first McCain and and now Palin prematurely appear on a major news outlet, either before the debate happened (McCain) or showing that they were putting praise ("She killed. ... She was the star") in someone else's mouth (Palin ad). How can they be so sloppy?
‘Reformer' Palin Billed State for 312 Nights Spent at Home
The Washington Post is reporting that Gov. Sarah Palin and her family haven't been conservative with their expense reports in the year+ she as served as governor of Alaska:
Chicks That Mosh
One of the bigger waves of last year in indie rock was the return (for the umpteenth time) of a lo-fi, reverb-heavy sound indebted to British bands like Joy Division and the Jesus and Mary Chain.
Thalia Mara Makeover?
A group of organizations has offered to help the city raise money to refurbish Thalia Mara Hall. At a City Council meeting this morning, supporters of the project said they hope renovating the auditorium will breathe life into the downtown's blossoming "arts and cultural district" ahead of the 2014 International Ballet Competition.
Malik Newman
The Callaway High School boys' basketball team is going for their third championship in four years this Saturday. The team plays at 2:45 p.m. against Wayne County for the 5A Boys title.
EEOC: Discriminating Against Felon Illegal?
Have you ever been convicted of a felony? The question, which is standard on most job applications, often spells heartbreak for many people who know that checking yes means their resume will likely end up in the garbage can.
