Bluntson Questions DA Over Bail Bonds

City Council President Frank Bluntson was certainly not alone in his frustration at last week's council meeting. Venting about the Dec. 11 arrest of a 16-year-old suspect in connection with an early-morning burglary and armed robbery in south Jackson, Bluntson demanded to know why the suspect was out on bond the day of the crime, having been charged in other robberies this summer.

[Al-Thaibani] Eye From The East

Growing impatient, her teacher walked down the hall to a first-grade classroom and requested me. I did not know what was going on. When the teacher asked me to read the word, the scene was clear. She wanted to show the girl that I, a first-grade student, could read the word that she, a third-grader, could not.

Faded

My flag is a little faded. It has been projecting out from its bracket on the front porch for years but is still in remarkably good shape for such an old piece of cloth. The colors aren't as vivid as they once were, but it doesn't have any holes and is wearing its age well. I hung the flag there because the brown log exterior of the house needed a little color. So I painted the front door and porch swing red, added a few green window frames and hung my flag from the shaded front porch. The flag gives dignity to the patriotic Christmas gingerbread house motif that is the end result of my misguided decorating. I spend far too many evenings sitting in my red swing watching the coordinating flag catch an occasional breeze. It is a beautiful flag. It inspires and reminds me of the remarkable achievements of a country that is occasionally as misguided as my decorating.

More Room At the Inn

While plans for a convention-center hotel remain in limbo, downtown Jackson is seeing plenty of hotel development on a smaller scale. Last week, a team of developers that included several Jackson businessmen presented the Jackson Redevelopment Authority with their vision for a 100- to 130-room hotel and residential building at Court and Lamar streets.

Tell Your Senators to Support SCHIP

By a vote of 225 to 204, the House yesterday cleared legislation (HR 3162) reauthorizing the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) and making important improvements to the Medicare and Medicaid programs. NAMI strongly supports the House bill passed yesterday and urges advocates to support the separate Senate bill that is currently under debate.

En Garde!

My first word/phrase was actually, "Dual Custody".

Dating back to the 23rd Century, my family has owned countless Heavernells. First transported to this country by the Smithervites and later by the Torkish of Borgues, these malnourished squabbles have littered the countryside behind my home in New England ever since I could remember. They taste like fruit baskets.

JFP Top 25: Week 8

The first BCS standings came out this week. While the rankings might not be the same as the top 10 of the JFP Top 25 poll, they are close. Clemson is getting a lot of love from the BCS but not from me. South Carolina replaces Clemson in my top 10. The other nine teams are the same but not in the same order.
