I have a secret. I am not the biggest fan of America. I have never waved a flag. I'm no jingoist. Even in elementary school I was reluctant to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Patriotism is a sincere love or devotion to one's country. Patriotism is a cause for which many lives have been taken. Patriotism is people linking arms at a prayer vigil. Patriotism is people singing, "We shall overcome" because they believe our homeland can evolve and weather the storm. Patriotism is suicide bombers who kill themselves in order to kill others for their country. Patriotism is a homeless man wrapped in newspaper and a garbage bag, sleeping beneath an American flag wrapped tightly around the top of the flagpole. Beside his sad eyes and toothless smile, rests a sign with three simple words, "God Bless America."

Link Lost in 'Illegal' Limbo

The Mississippi Link is suing Jackson Mayor Frank Melton and City Council members who voted against a recent veto override. Last month, the council failed to override a veto from Frank Melton rejecting the council's decision to award printing for the city's legal ads to The Mississippi Link newspaper. Also named in the lawsuit with Melton are Ward 1 Councilman Ben Allen, Ward 5 Councilman Charles Tillman and Ward 4 Councilman Frank Bluntson.

Poll: Dems Lead on Most Issues; Kerry and Bush Tied

AP is reporting: "John Kerry is heading to his party's national convention with Democrats faring better with the public on both domestic and international issues, according to a poll released Wednesday. But Kerry remains locked in a tie in the presidential race. When people are asked which party would do a better job of handling a given issue, Democrats are now 12 points up on handling the economy and have an even larger lead on issues from education to health care and the environment, according to the poll by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press.

A Spoken Word Revival

Sinclair Opts for 'Fair and Balanced' After All

New York Times reports: "After stirring up protest over its plans to broadcast a documentary critical of Senator John Kerry, the Sinclair Broadcast Group presented a program last night that gave short shrift to that film and offered instead a measured analysis of the debate over Mr. Kerry's Vietnam War record. The hourlong special program, produced by the news department at Sinclair, a major financial supporter of Republican candidates and which regularly features conservative commentary on its newscasts, included as many backers of Mr. Kerry as critics.
