Stuart Irby Found Dead

Jackson businessman Stuart M. Irby, 58, died last night of an apparent suicide.

WLBT reports that Irby's caretaker found him hanging in his home at about 8 p.m. Police do not suspect foul play.

The Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Inducts Six

On June 12, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame inducted seven new members Among the inductees were Teresa Edwards, Leta Andrews, Chris Weller, Teresa Weatherspoon, Gloria Ray, and Rebecca Lobo. Opened in 1999, the Hall of Fame is located in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the Hall of Honor is complemented by such artifacts as a 1901 rule book and the WVU jersey worn by Georgeann Wells, who was the first woman to dunk in a college game.

Goodbye, Bobby DeLaughter

Ever since the former Judge Bobby DeLaughter's plea deal with the feds was announced last week, with him headed to prison, we've heard the words "Cedric Willis" come out of many people's mouths. It seems we're not the only ones thrilled to see justice, of a fashion, coming to the former prosecutur who, alongside then-boss Ed Peters, allowed Cedric to go to prison for 12 years based on bad evidence. Then, as Cedric sat in prison praying for justice, DeLaughter became famous, wrote a book and became a judge. Disgusting irony.

Immigration Bill's Fate Rests with Senate Dem

Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves' office just sent out a statement on the controversial anti-undocumented immigrant HB 488. In the release, Reeves states that he's heard the concerns about the bill's potential costs to law enforcement agencies and the state economy. To that end, Reeves assigned HB 488 to the Senate Judiciary B, chaired by Hob Bryan, a Democrat from Amory for further study.

8th Annual JFP Chick Ball Set for Saturday, July 28, 2012

The 8th Annual JFP Chick Ball is raising money to help the Center for Violence Prevention start a rape crisis center. Center Director Sandy Middleton chose the focus for this year's fundraising effort because sexual assault is an epidemic in Mississippi, and far too resources are available to help the victims. As always, the JFP Chick Ball will be a fun and funky event with a cover charge of only $5 for men and women 18 years of age and older. Once inside, you will find all sorts of fun ways to help raise additional funds, including the city's best silent auction with well over 100 gift packages and art by local artists to bid on. In the past, the JFP Chick Ball has funded a new mini-van for the center, raised start-up funds for the area's first (and subsequently very successful) batterer's intervention program, set up a legal fund to help families escape abuse and funded rural programs around the metro area.
