The DLC vs. Howard Dean

Naeem Mohaiemen writes for Alternet: "[A] core part of Dean's appeal was his overwhelming support among young people. In 2000, one of the lowest voter turnouts was among young people. If you were under 24, you tuned out and stayed home in November. By contrast, the bulk of Howard Dean's support was among the youth of America. Energized by a strategy focused on Internet campaigning, 'Generation Dean' or 'Dean 2.0' spread across college campuses and gave a youthful aura to the man from Vermont.

Global Handmade Goodies

Take a left onto Grants Ferry off Lakeland Drive, and tucked in the back of a small plaza, inside a tobacco store, treasures await those who appreciate a bargain, value handmade beauty and cannot stand a 24-hour period without some kind of shopping. I swing open the door, and a bright, smiling face greets me.

[FLY] Guys Decorate [with found objects]

Cabbages, Fleas and ... Love?

Margaret Walker might have affectionately written, "My monkey wrench man is my sweet patootie," about her husband in the late 70s, but English speakers aren't the only ones who love turns into blubbering fools. Foreign languages of the world contain just as many sweet and silly terms of endearment.

More S'mores

No camping trip or backyard barbecue is ever complete without a gooey bite of s'mores as the fire starts to die down. I like mine best with a swig of icy root beer.

[Cool Kids Club] Power Hour

With school quickly approaching, many parents are asking, "Where will the children go after school?" Many after-school programs offer activities for youngsters, including the Boys and Girls club.

Laid Back Style

Nate Berkus—you know Nate, the interior-design god of Oprah Winfrey fame—says, "Your home should rise up to greet you." But sometimes after being greeted, you just want to lounge. You don't want to entertain. You just want to sit in solitude and enjoy the lovely space you've created for yourself.

Alt.Bride

Chrissy Valentine, 31, grew up in south Jackson and graduated from Wingfield High School in 1996. Valentine was a serious tomboy growing up, and her grandfather was her best friend in the world.

Whole Foods: Using Nature's Palate to Inspire Your Pad

"You are what you eat!" …If I only had a dollar for every time I heard myself utter that truism over the years, I'd be rich. Or at the very least, never eat a fat slice of chocolate cake again. Don't even get me started on Violet Beauregarde's blueberry pie explosion—the sad Wonka scene would make any child who grew up reading Roald Dahl shudder.

Ann Williams

Ann Williams, 54, is a bit tough, a little hard to take in at first. But that's because she's passionate. And she speaks the truth.

Betsy Bradley

In a hard hat and heels, Betsy Bradley artfully maneuvered past the piles of rubble, plywood gangplanks laid over shallow ditches, and piles of sand and sawdust that surround the construction site of the new Mississippi Museum of Art.

‘A Wider Examination'?

Journalist Oliver Staley is writing good stories in the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, trying to address larger questions along the way. He walked up to me today on the court square and told me that one of my old columns for the Progressive Populist (about Charles Pickering) inspired him to look into the investigative reports in the Sovereignty Files that fed information, including the station wagon's license plate number, to the local law enforcement and the Klan. He had a copy of my column printed out.

Calm Before the Storm

Today, I heard that the Killen trial media was gathering in the afternoon and headed over to Neshoba County to see what was up. The town seemed very calm, other than the mass of cars around the media center, which is in the old Magnolia restaurant on Walnut Street a block from the courthouse. It's a loft-like building with low-hanging loft lights and a really rustic, yet hip interior with exposed brick. It's too bad this place closed; it was probably hard to compete with the casino restaurants.

Workaholic Needs To Schedule Regular Exercise

For the past few months I've been loving the time spent either on the elliptical at the gym or on the bicycle that I've recently dusted off, adjusted a bit and started riding around the neighborhood. After an hour or so of cardio mixed with hard work for my leg muscles, I'm ready to enjoy a long, quiet evening and a good nights sleep. There's only one problem -- I generally only get that exercise one (sometimes two) nights per week!
