High-Tech Faith
In a stylish suit and tie, the man standing at the front of the sanctuary bore little resemblance to the devil. No horns protruded through his mop of white hair, and no tail was visible. Critics may not accuse former monk John Dominic Crossan of being Lucifer, but they appear to believe the two are on a first-name basis.
Get Your Weekend Started
The weather isn't the only thing that is heating up this weekend. If you are in the mood for a night of Alfred Hitchcock and humor, check out "The 39 Steps," at New Stage Theatre at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $25 and $22 for students and seniors. If you'd rather practice your paintbrush stroke, head to Easely Amused in Ridgeland and learn the art of painting the Fleur-de-lis at the "Fleur" Painting Class at 7 p.m. Don't see anything that catches your fancy? Then check out the JFP Events Calendar.
Bernice Rayford
Bernice Rayford, 50, has more to offer the literary world than just "Collard Greens and Ham," the title of her debut self-published novel in 2005. She recently completed her seventh novel, "Betty Bushy: She Will Make You Laugh."
Civil Rights Museum Funding Advances In House
A proposed national civil-rights museum in downtown Jackson could receive $30 million in state funds, under a bill up for consideration by the state House of Representatives. The House Ways & Means Committee voted today to approve HB 1463, which allots $55 million total to the civil-rights museum and a museum of Mississippi history, both to be located near the William Winter state archives building. The bill now goes to the House floor for a vote by the full chamber.
Supes Advisor Sued over Swap
On April 11, Roderick Mullice of Liberty Partners sued Hinds County Board of Supervisors adviser and Malachi Group CEO Porter Bingham for contempt in Fulton County, Ga. Mullice sued Bingham after he failed to appear for two post-judgment hearings over an unpaid contract.
Make Your Own Pet Food
Ever since the pet food recall, I've been worried about what my cat, Sunshine, and my mom's dog, Midnight, have been eating. I've been reading labels to avoid anything with gravy so I can avoid wheat gluten, and even if there is no gravy, I still read the can to see if there is wheat gluten in it. I decided to buy a dog food recipe e-book so that I can make my own safe-to-eat vittles.
[Fly] DIY Play Dough
This year, make a quick and easy Valentine's gift for the kids in your life. Experiment with color, scent and glitter to create homemade Play Dough. Use scents like cinnamon, vanilla, almond or peppermint extracts or any essential oils you have on hand. If you're feeling really ambitious, make a batch of white, a batch of pink and a batch of red.
[Talk] Common Cause
Slowly, a crowd begins to fill what once was the music store of MusiQuarium in Banner Hall. There are still remnants of the funky shop in nooks and crannies; a MQ neon light here, leopard-covered cushion there. A Blue Moon Café sign, left over from a recent Lemuria reading, hangs over a small stage where Eric Stracener strums softly on an acoustic guitar. It is a diverse crowd of about 30 people ranging in age from 8 to 80 gathered together on Aug. 14 for a common cause: to stop the death penalty.
[Stiggers] Aunt Tee Tee's Superhighway
Momma Church Hat: "You're watching 'Dateline TV: Ghetto Science Team Neighborhood Watch Edition.' I'm reporting live from the front porch of Aunt Tee Tee Hustle. For two weeks, neighbors and close friends have witnessed some very unusual activity at her house. Since this afternoon, the GSTV camera crew (also part-time surveillance detectives from the 'Cheaters' reality television show) and I have been monitoring the strange activity from across the street with our consumer-brand digital camcorder and parabolic microphone.
Prepare for an Early Frost
Some folks may remember that first frost came early for central Mississippi last year, at the end of October. While frost is a pleasant milestone of the seasons for most people, it can be tragedy for fall gardeners.
No Good Can Come of Immigration Suit
Whenever election season draws near, the shenanigans in which politicians will engage to score cheap points are seemingly boundless.
JRA Gets New Leadership, Iron Horse Gets Funds
The Iron Horse Grill will close on a deal for $2.5 million in urban-renewal bonds through the JRA and $1.5 million in new-market tax credits Friday morning.
Go carLESS
"The camera! There's no battery!" he said, as the cheers of protesters drowned out his voice.
This afternoon, I was in my office working on this week's issue when my phone rang. When I answered, I was met by the panicky voice of JFP reporter Adam Lynch.
"Ain't No Stoppin' Us Now"
I saw this YouTube video today and it inspired me greatly, but I decided that I would not post it unless Obama won because of the song choice. Well, he won, so here you go:
Extremely Faulty Planning
So I spent most of yesterday morning in the condo, having long legal-jargony telephone conversations with the folks at CheapOAir and the folks at Deltaneither of whom I will ever have any other conversations with, because I will never fly with either again. Which kinda sucks because, up until yesterday, Delta was my favorite airline.
Minor: Haley Should Release Tax Returns
In Bill Minor's syndicated column this week, he argues that Gov. Haley Barbour should be more accountable to the public:
Senate Passes Sunshine Act
The Senate has just voted to pass the Sunshine Act, SB 2084. If it becomes law, the act would allow state agencies to bypass the attorney general's office and choose their own attorneys.
Jamie Franks: ‘I'm Being Attacked'
Jamie Franks today sent out an e-mail to supporters, responding to the state (and national?) Republican Party's "liberal"-baiting campaign—"Too Liberal for Mississippi"—against him. Here is Franks' verbatim statement:
Why My Heart Aches This Evening
When I heard about the body of a 15-year-old girl being found at Presidential Hills Park, my initial thought was how the incident will affect the reputation of the park, but then I realized what a horrible thing I was doing to not think about the young lady first.
Dear John: A Babe, A Beefcake, A Break-Up
The allure of a babe and a beefcake in a priggish bodice ripper of conventional romance doesn't carry the same weight of appeal as it did when I was tween-aged. Cozy crush flicks, like Dear John, are snicker material for the over age 12 crowd. I didn't snicker as much as I yawned with sheer exhaustion. This is a monumentally sluggish and shallow film. This picture hums a tiresome whine of unrequited love that falters to a fuzzy fizzle at the end.
