Time to Hit Re-set, Jackson
As I sit waiting for the returns on election night, I can't help but reflect on the mess that was the last four yearsand what got us there. As much as anything else, the need for media sensationalism and pandering to the powerful put us here. I have spent an inordinate amount of time in the last four years researching Frank Melton's history in Jackson. I have read about everything ever been written about himand the so-called journalism that allowed someone so unsuited for elected office to become mayor in a "landslide" four years ago tonight, as The Clarion-Ledger put it, was simply abysmal. The Ledger, especially, let down an entire city by pretending that Melton was a "folk hero" who could solve crime in 90 days. This corporate newspaper endorsed the man who the most powerful people in Jackson wanted in office. And it pulled punch after punch that could have alerted voters what they were getting into.
‘Men of Character' Live Auction to Debut at JFP Chick Ball on July 9
Here are the "Men of Character":
In addition to the best and most chic silent auction around, the 7th Annual JFP Chick Ball will feature a live auction of Jackson "Men of Character" at the fundraising event July 9 at Hal & Mal's in downtown Jackson. Bring your checkbooks and credit cards and bid on the following fabulous men, who will in turn, uh, perform services they are best known for on behalf of the winning bidders (get your mind out of the gutter; their "services" are listed after their names!). Professional auctioneeress Christine Whitton of Clinton will auction the "Men of Character" starting at 7:55 p.m. in the Red Room, right before the other awards. All auction proceeds will benefit the Center for Violence Prevention and help stop domestic abuse in central Mississippi. This year's money is dedicated to stopping domestic abuse in rural counties around Jackson.

It's So Great to be Fly
Go fetch me some coffee. Make sure you pick up my dry cleaning. I was going to be doing all work and no play, and no pay, was my first thought when I heard I was going to be interning at JFP. My second thought was OMG I have no journalism experience. Well, I was right about the no pay part. Even so, I am gaining a lot of experience that will help fatten my wallet later.
ARTICLE: Who You Callin' a Maverick?
We've heard the word "maverick" quite a bit during this election cycle. The question is this: Do we really know what we're talking about when we use that word? Check this out:
DOW Plunges 700 Points, Again

So, just how can needy victims of Katrina on the Coast be screwed once again? Barbour diverts low-income housing money, and now this? Soul, Front and Center
I am not a soul-music guy, generally speaking; I grew up on punk rock for the most part. Outside the luminaries of soul my knowledge of the genre drops off precipitously on the musical graph.
