Watermelon 101
Watermelon has long been a southern staple, and Mississippians are aficionados. I recently took a poll among friends and coworkers to learn how best they liked to eat their watermelon.

Something Old, Something New
I'm a modern woman. I realize that many time-honored southern traditions, once revered as sacred, have become passé.
Unconventional Romantic Films for an Offbeat Valentine's Day
"I was surprised to learn that lesbians accessorized. I didn't know that." Jessica
Death by Cubicle
Instead of delving into a 9-to-5 pace, Colleen Kinder sought out a national fellowship that took her to Cuba. The 2003 Yale graduate spent her first year out of college marching with students opposed to Fidel Castro, volunteering in a nursing home, salsa dancing and writing.
WRAP IT UP: A Holiday Guide to Eco-Friendly Gift-Giving
It's great fun to watch small children excitedly tear through the paper on the way to their gifts, but for adults and everyday gift-giving, you can do away with wrapping paper altogether in favor of more creative solutions. Here's your chance to express your creative side while caring for the environment. Why use wrapping paper when there are so many other fun ways to decorate packages?
Sweet Potato Capital Of The World?
Sweet potatoes are a popular dish all across Mississippi. Many Jackson restaurants serve sweet potato fries as a side dish or appetizer.
For the Love of Tea
I am a lifelong tea lover. My love affair with tea started when I was a child with sweet sun tea, and as an adult I love the way a cup of tea warms my entire body on cold winter days or soothes me when I'm sick.
14 Ways to Use Chocolate
1. Melt a pot of chocolate and dip your favorite snacks into it: graham crackers, marshmallows, pound cake, strawberries or whole frozen bananas. Dried fruit and nuts, like peanuts and almonds, work well, too.
What's a Throw?
I have family all over Louisiana, so Mardi Gras usually happens for me every year. It has trained my hand to only procure the best of the throws.

[Guy] Translations
The ultimate [FLY] Guy, in addition to being well-read, well-kempt and well-muscled, is also well-prepared.
From the Artist's Hands
The Jackson area is filled with tons of creative folks offering handmade items that would make wonderful holiday gifts. Each item carries the essence of the person who made it. What a wonderful way to connect with community. Each piece is a labor of love that you can pass on to a special person in your life. Jingle your way over to this week's JFP Issuu for more merry fun.
FLOTUS Dress-Gate: Weigh In on Michelle Obama's Dress
Maybe people are bored after the election, but we have something new to talk about. And it's not just the puppy question. Fashionistas may love it (I at least like it), but others are complaining about the dress first lady-elect (or FLOTUS) Michelle Obama chose for Tuesday night. Care to weigh in? See the dress here

Endless Summer: Drink Specials
The summer is far from over in the Deep South, so you might as well sit back with a cool drink in hand and embrace the fact that we made it through another August. Here are a few recipes to help you end the summer well.
Ivory Harris
Ivory Harris remembers the Northwest Jackson neighborhood of Presidential Hills where he grew up as a "living, breathing community." As a student, a teacher and a public servant, Harris has never strayed far.

Vince Gordon
"Fast cars, fast motorcycles, fast women." That's how Vince Gordon describes his former lifestyle as a military policeman in Yokosuka, Japan.
Jackie Bell
Jackie Bell, 43, steps out of a little red two-seater, and I'm jealous of her legs. I briefly recall my inferiority when Miss Bell called me on stage during a charity fund raiser, and all of Jackson saw me dance like a white Baptist girl next to her trained-ballerina self. Then she said I don't look more than 25, and I forgave her and loved her more. Today she hugs me like she just saw me yesterday, but is so glad to see me again. Suddenly I feel like the leggiest woman in the world. See, that's what Jackie Bell does. She sings like her back ain't got no bone, and she makes you think you can, too.
E. Willander Wells
"Elegance" is a word that keeps surfacing in conversations with fashion designer E. Willander Wells as we sit outside Broad Street bakery.
Heather Wagner
Heather Wagner credits her mother, Jane Philo, with inspiring her career in victims' rights law. Now retired, Philo spent 23 years working with victims of domestic violence in Biloxi, and Wagner saw the results of abuse first hand. "When she came and picked me up from school, that's where I went, to the shelter," she says.
Patricia Wynn
Local artist Patricia Wynn's passion for life pervades everything she touches. Her artwork, volunteer efforts and the community in which she lives thrive under her care.
Caleb Hampton
If it weren't for the deep teal blue sign perpendicular to the street, I wouldn't have noticed the unassuming rectangle of concrete blocks at 3028 W. Northside Drive. Caleb Hampton, a Jacksonian who will turn 56 on Jan. 1, has owned and operated Hamp's Place, what I call an old-school-style club, since 1997. He opened his first club, Stardust, in 1975, back behind Hamp's on the Strip—on Moonbeam Street, just one block past Sunray Drive. It took some convincing by a friend who ran Birdland, but finally Hampton gave in. "I said, 'I'm going to try it for a minute,' and I've been trying it ever since," he told me in a deep, quietly resonant voice.
