It's About Children, Stupid!
Samuel Johnson said, "A decent provision for the poor is the true test of civilization." In that case, our state may have a ways to go on the road to civilization. The Annie E. Casey Foundation released the newest Kids Count report June 11 showing that, once again, Mississippi resides close to the bottom in most categories. Some of these, like poverty, are on a national upswing. Twenty-one percent of all children in America live in poverty-ridden conditions, a higher rate than in 1975.

[In Gallieries] "Loose Lips
I'd like to peek inside Melissa Stern's head at some point. Who knows what little treasures one might find. In "Loose Lips," the artist has created an exhibit of 13 short stories told through mixed-media canvases depicting wacky, and often dark, stories such as the plight of a poor soul named Willie who is attacked by a swarm of wasps. The overall theme of Stern's work seems to be fun, however. The best part of this exhibit is that viewers get to choose how each "story" ends by selecting their favorite of three ending canvases for each story. The 6-year-old crayon-eating Maggie of yesteryear is bubbling to the surface with excitement. Stern will be in the Millsaps Academic Complex Jan. 23 to discuss her work. Maybe I'll have my chance to pick her brain after all.

Saints: The Agony Continues
The New Orleans Saints' miserable season came to a merciful end on Sunday when the Saints defeated the playoff-bound Dallas Cowboys, 13-7. The Saints finished 8-8, but were one missed extra point away from a possible 9-7 (and several stupid plays away from making the playoffs). In many ways, the Saints are what the NFL has become in the era of free agency. Just about any team is only a few plays from going to the Super Bowl. Dynasties are a thing of the past. This year's doormat could be next year's champ. It may drive the sports media (and bettors) crazy, but one can't argue with the results. The NFL is more popular than ever (and one of the few pro sports whose TV ratings have actually gone up this year). ... Paging Mr. Horn ...
