Levee Board Opinion Request Withdrawn

The Department of Archives and History has withdrawn its request for an opinion from Attorney General Jim Hood to determine if the Rankin-Hinds Pearl River Flood and Drainage Control District Levee Board should be designated as a state agency.

Obama Names African American Jackson Attorney to Federal Bench

Carlton Reeves is set to become the second African American appointee to the U.S. Southern District Court in Mississippi. President Barack Obama sent Reeves' name to the Senate yesterday for confirmation, but Reeves has been rumored as Obama's pick for more than a year.

Big Fair Numbers, Medical Mall Groundbreaking, Creative Class Conference

The Mississippi State Fair is attracting much larger crowds than it did last year, when rain kept attendance low. An estimated 307,052 people attended the fair through Monday, according to the state Fair Commission. Attendance through the weekend was almost 100,000 above last year's numbers.

MAMAS WHO THINK: Back When I Was Cool

No one would know it by looking at me now, but I used to be kind of cool. At least I used to think that I was. I would fly around the college campus in my black vintage '78 280-Z with personalized plates, wayfarers on and Bob Marley wailing in the wind. Now, I lope around Jackson in a maroon mini-van with a roll of paper towels in my cup holder, my Walgreen's $6 shades, Barney songs blaring from the back speakers, and enough Goldfish and Teddy Grahams lodged in the seat crevices to live on for weeks if we ever happen to be stranded in a blizzard.

Singling Out Single Moms

Great—another Hallmark holiday, as if picking out cards for your half-sister's secretary's niece's baptism wasn't enough already. Hoping to spark a national trend, American Singles Education Inc. is sponsoring a singles-mixer celebration in San Rafael, Calif. Single Mother's Day is May 8, the day before traditional Mother's Day.

The Media as Censor

The war in Iraq has also become a war of images. This week, we were troubled by a video of the be-heading of an American. The week before, it was pictures of tortured Iraqi prisoners. Every week, we see photographs of American soldiers who have given their lives there.

Party at Melton's House

The Jackson Free Press broke the story online July 11 that Jackson Mayor Frank Melton was planning a Friday-the-13th fund raiser at his home for sheriff's candidate and city spokesman Tyrone Lewis.

Millsaps College senior Jessica Lester has traveled extensively through Latin America. "I've seen a lot of the injustices and extreme poverty [there]," she says. That's why it is so vital to her that people are aware of the mass femicide occurring in northern Mexico.

Sushi, Tattoos and Redevelopment

The Fondren neighborhood will get a long-awaited sushi restaurant in April, developer Mike Peters says. Peters told the Jackson Free Press that Fatsumo Sushi, an American-style sushi restaurant in Gulfport, will open a location on Duling Avenue April 1. The Fondren location, between Fischer Galleries and the redeveloped Duling School, was originally set to house a different franchise, Fuze Sushi. A number of hiccups, including the death of the restaurant's original chef, delayed the opening indefinitely, however.

Fresh Air and Fun This Weekend

Today, start things off by dusting off your 10-speed and going to Rainbow Whole Foods (2807 Old Canton Road) at 6 p.m., to meet with bikers who will gather for the Autumn Community Bike Ride. The ride ends with refreshments at Sal & Mookie's (565 Taylor St.). Later, head to Fondren Corner (2906 N. State St.) and do the cha-cha at Salsa Mississippi's Latin Rooftop Dance Party at 8 p.m. Beer, water and sodas is available to quench your thirst. Admission is $10. If you're not into sweating, there are several plays tonight at 7:30 p.m. such as "Red, White and Tuna" at New Stage Theatre (1100 Carlisle St.), "Bridge to Terabithia" at Actor's Playhouse (121 Paul Truit Lane, Pearl) and "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at Black Rose Community Theatre (103 Black St.). Lucky 13

The Jason Turner Band is practically a Jackson institution after performing for 13 years. Now, the band is preparing for the release of its new CD, appropriately called "13 Years." With Jason Turner as the front man, the popular rock band has opened for many well-known musicians such as Robert Randolph and the Violent Femmes. Turner's unique voice resonates through each venue as the band cranks through its shows. Always happy to take requests, he feels out the crowd and sings through the night.

Music Reviews

Olympic Records act, the Da Vincis, make exactly the music teenage boys should make. Their loose, jazzy pop songs possess a purity free from the baggage that comes with age and experience and strategic commercialism. Their debut album, "See you Tonight," is breezy, diverse and catchy.

Collective Vision

Several weeks ago, the City of Jackson launched a marketing campaign called Celebrate Jackson. One of the overarching themes that we wanted to be sure to convey is that Celebrate Jackson is an inclusive, participatory, and fluid exercise in recognizing all that is wonderful and praiseworthy in our City.

Anita's Favorite Movies of 2009

This is my first "official" blog for the Jackson Free Press, and what better way to take this virgin voyage through JFP blogland than discussing my favorite films of 2009. I compiled the list based on movies that have made their way into Mississippi multiplexes. Thanks to the efforts of Malco, Regal Entertainment and Cinemark, we were able to get a good portion of the year's critically successful films, and I hope that you continue to support their efforts and the smaller films that are not aimed at the adolescent male crowd.
