It's all about Saturday's big matchup, in case you haven't noticed. I pick Alabama.
Game of the Year
Saturday, Nov. 5, I will be at my brother-in-law's man cave. The grill will be ready for some burgers and brats. Our favorite beverage will be in a cooler and the TV tuned into CBS.
Suck for What?
ESPN talking heads are fond of the phrase "Suck for Luck," shorthand for the idea that NFL teams would tank games to draft Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.
JFP Top 25: Week 10
Undefeated teams are dropping like flies. After this past weekend, only six undefeated teams remain. One undefeated team is guaranteed to fall this week when LSU travels to Alabama in a huge showdown.

For the second week this season, we have football every day of the week.
The Zombie Game Plan
This week is Halloween, and I feel the need to shed light on a potential danger that our government is not discussing. Of all the great things President Barack Obama has done, he has yet to address the potential danger of the coming Zombie Apocalypse.
Bulldogs Need Some Bite
In the preseason, I picked UM to go 5-7, but five wins might be hard to reach at this point. With a season record of 2-5 and games to play against Auburn and LSU, it seems unlikely Ole Miss will make a bowl game. They are still alive, but they can only afford to lose to LSU and have a postseason chance.
JFP Top 25: Week 9
Last week, two previously undefeated teams went down. Wisconsin was at the wrong end of a 44-yard Hail Mary completion in a loss to Michigan State. Replay helped get the call right and gave an upset to the Spartans.

Basketball season starts soon for football fans whose team is already done for the season.
Real Men Wear Pink
"Black Out" games look awesome at night when fans wear black. "White Out" games are better in the day as fans wear white. Before last Friday, though, I had never had a seen a "Pink Out" game. That is what I found as Callaway High School took on Ridgeland High School.
Who's Going to Bowl?
The annual rite of fall has begun. Sunday, Oct. 16, the first BCS—Bowl Championship Series—standings were released.
JFP Top 25: Week 8
The first BCS standings came out this week. While the rankings might not be the same as the top 10 of the JFP Top 25 poll, they are close. Clemson is getting a lot of love from the BCS but not from me. South Carolina replaces Clemson in my top 10. The other nine teams are the same but not in the same order.

The NFL is full of surprises. Who had the 49ers, Bills and Lions as good teams? Or the Eagles, Jets and Colts as bad ones?
Tackling Adversity
"Show me someone who has done something worthwhile, and I'll show you someone who has overcome adversity." —Lou Holtz
Al Davis, RIP
I have always heard deaths come in threes. Once Apple CEO Steve Jobs passed away, I started watching for the other two. Saturday morning, news broke that Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis had passed away at age 82.
JFP Top 25: Week 7
Not much shake-up at the top of the JFP Top 25 Poll this week. There are 10 to 15 teams fighting for the national championship. re themselves no bowl, and which team wins first.

Southern Miss Golden Eagles and Mississippi State Bulldogs are on the road this week.
Standardized
I missed who said the dumbest thing I heard this weekend, or I would be ranting about that idiot. Instead, I must rant about what was said.
JFP Top 25: Week 6
Last week, I opened the JFP Top 25 explaining that October is the month college football's best teams begin to separate themselves from the rest. This is the month when the pretenders turn into pumpkins, and contenders become monsters.
Lies and Damn Lies
As movies shift from mindless summer action adventures to more award-worthy releases, you may hear a lot about "Moneyball," starring Brad Pitt.
Give ‘Em a Break
I am going to go out on a limb and write about two quarterbacks who have already met up in Monday Night Football: Rex Grossman and Tony Romo.
JFP Top 25: Week 5
LSU continues its march to a showdown against Alabama in November. Both teams have big tests in the way; Florida plays the Tigers and the Crimson Tide this month. We'll see plenty of other big tests played out this month including Wisconsin vs. Nebraska this weekend.

Mississippi schools keep embarrassing us. Last week: Ole Miss 'teddy bears' vs. Vanderbilt.
What if the SEC expands?
If the SEC can get the Aggies and Seminoles into the fold, it is likely they would want two more teams to form a 16-team super conference. Texas A&M joining the SEC is a double edge sword as far as recruiting is concerned.
JFP Top 25: Week 4
Week three was tough for the bottom of the JFP Top 25. Four schools dropped out allowing four new schools to jump in the poll. Dropping out was Mississippi State, Ohio State, Auburn and Arizona State. Finding their way into the Top 25 are Baylor, West Virginia, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt.
Comegy Gets a Gold Star
There has not been too much to be happy about this season from the big schools in college football. In fact, after three weeks, a lot has been downright ugly.

I'm trying to pick myself off the floor from my pick-em beat down.
JFP Top 25: Week 3
After two week of college football, there is not much turnover in the JFP Top 25 poll at top of the poll. The top 10 stays the same as last week. There's major turnover from 11 to 25. For the first time ever we have teams drop out of the poll and new teams enter.

Iron Doc Heads to Kona
Emerging from the water in the Memorial Hermann Ironman 70.3 Texas last May, Dr. Larkin Carter found himself 10 minutes off his normal pace. The 49-year-old, originally from Meridian, had struggled in his 2.4-mile swim.
JFP Top 25: Week 2
We have a slight change at the top of the JFP Top 25 this week: LSU gets rewarded for playing a top-5 team, Oregon, and moves to the top of the poll. No teams fell out of the rankings, but several moved around. The biggest tumble was Notre Dame from 18 to 25, a seven spot fall. The biggest jump was LSU from third to first.
They Said What?
This Football Preview marks my first full year writing for the Jackson Free Press. When I first started, my wonderful editor, Ronni Mott, explained that everything she knew about sports could fit in a thimble. She wondered about some of my first articles, if what I was writing was true or truly dirty.

Conerly Watch List
At the end of every football season since 1996, the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame and Museum has awarded the Conerly Trophy to the best football player at a four-year university or college. Five quarterbacks, six running backs and four defensive players (linebackers or defensive line) have won the trophy so far.
Favre Watch
I believe he's finished playing, but you know, we're just starting to play these (preseason) games," Childress said. "If somebody gets nicked, someone may have a need, and somebody may be a salesman enough to talk him off the ranch.
Flynn's Games Of The Week
Each week of the college football season has at least one must-see showdown. There are in-state rivalries, big conference games and, of course, the annual homecoming games. Here are the college games I would pay to see.

Over 15 years ago on a day like today, my excitement would be at an all-time high. Why, because 15 years ago, I would be getting ready to start my final season of high school football.

When I was little, I wanted to be just like my older brother Shawn. I come from a large family—I'm the middle child of seven children—filled with strong personalities.
Cost of a Life
Wes Leonard had just made the game-winning shot to complete a perfect undefeated season for Fennville High School in Michigan on March 3. The crowd cheered as his teammates lifted the 16-year-old basketball hero into the air in celebration.

The Viking Classic is Set to Tee Off Thursday
In 2009 the Viking Classic was cancelled to due rain and Mississippi missed out on hosting its only PGA event. This 2011 edition of the Viking Classic is a make up for the missed 2009 tournament.
Love and Hate
Golf is the one sport I have a love-hate relationship with. If you have never played golf, I will try to put that in perspective for you. Golf is like the ex-girlfriend that got away. You learn she is back in town, and all you can remember is the good times you had together. Those wonderful memories make you want to start the doomed relationship all over again.
British ‘Baseball'
Two rabid sets of fans fill the stands, each side cheering loudly. A world championship is in reach, and the fate of a bitter rivalry is at stake for both teams. Clinging to a five-run lead as the game nears the end, a pitcher is about to deliver the biggest pitch of this event.

Wendi Reed
Rick Fremin, who became coach of the Jackson State University women's softball team in January, does not hesitate naming the on-the-field leader for the Lady Tigers. "Without question, one player I feel does not get enough media hype or exposure is Wendi Reed," he said.
Blondes vs. Brunettes

Just before her junior year in college at Delta State University, around 1999, now the love of my life and bride, Lacey, met a young man while working at a summer job. He offered to show her around because she was new to the area and transferring from Hinds Community College.
