The City of Jackson is pleased to cooperate with Hinds County in its efforts to make sandbags available to citizens. The City of Jackson is providing sand to the County.
The Sheriff’s Department is providing inmates to bag the sand and the distribution of the sandbags will be coordinated by the Hinds County EOC. Residents may call the Hinds County EOC at 601.960.1476.
“We commend Hinds County for this initiative and we are pleased we are able to provide material for this effort,” said Mayor Harvey Johnson, Jr.
PEARL— Shelters continue to open for residents evacuating from their homes as Hurricane Isaac approaches the state. As of 6:30 a.m., 31 shelters are open around south and central Mississippi sheltering 2,132 evacuees.
Residents should monitor local media outlets for updates. MEMA updates shelter information as it becomes available. Shelter updates may also be available from the Mississippi Red Cross at www.mississippi-redcross.org. This website also lists what items evacuees should bring to a Red Cross Shelter.

Hurricane Isaac Causes Widespread Power Outages in Mississippi
Jackson, MS— Utility companies in Mississippi are reporting 24,400 homes are without power as Hurricane Isaac slowly moved through the state.
Utility crews from Mississippi and other states are working to restore electricity to homes across south Mississippi.
As of 11 a.m., the following utility providers reported outages: Electric Power Associations of Mississippi has 15,300 customers without power. Mississippi Power has 7,600 customers without power. Entergy has 1,500 customers without power.

Due to the imminent arrival of Hurricane Isaac, we are closed tonight, august 28, 2012, out of concern for the safety of our staff and our customers. We will make a decision concerning our Wednesday hours after we observe the conditions and examine forecasts tomorrow.
Jackson – The Mississippi Department of Employment Security (MDES) announced today the closure of more WIN Job Centers due to bad weather.
WIN Job Center locations in Marion, Adams and Pike Counties will be closed until further notice. In addition, the WIN Job Centers in Hancock, Harrison, Jackson, and Pearl River Counties are still closed
Customers may use the agency website at mdes.ms.gov to file for unemployment benefits or access many of the services provided by the WIN Job Centers.
