Why don't you young fraternity brothers put up some of the dollars you spend on partying and buy a piece of property. Once paid for, you can borrow against the land value to build a nice place that could be called "Greeks of the New South".
Stop trying to justify participation in anything that smells of the "old south". It is absolutely no way around the singing of dixie, cotton pickers, maids, butlers, Ms. Anns', Mr. Charlies', rapes, bed winches, house Ns, Field Ns, lynch mobs, whips and whelps, blood and deaths. So you young people, stop fooling yourselves. Ain't nothing in the "old south" changed!
Langston Hughes said it best, "Life for me ain't been no crystal stair." To continue on the path of supporting businesses representing the old south will only muddy life for these organizations both now and in the future. My suggestion to the young is to: DANCE less, DRINK less, THINK more and tsoon the pictures that you take will be of things you have built.
Always remember that "a little learning is a dangerous thing........."

@kingkeylion "Frankly, I am saddened by the condescending, $.25 psychoanalysis and the ill-advised methodologies of the city operatives who carried out this political act, which created more controversy/ill-will than it resolved."
My grandma always said, "You can't worry about what people say: What you do worry about is - if the things they are saying are true." My comments did not come out of psychoanalysis, but, out of Grief and Loss 101. Because we are human, there are emotional responses to our losses. A great dis-service is being given to those who are hurting when you start blaming others for decisions which can be legally justified.
I had no dog in this fight; I am only an old senior citizen from the 60s with many battle scars to include jails, bombings, and murder. I know what the letter and the spirit of Mississippi law can deliver for some folks. I've witnessed it, so, save your energy on an attempt to educate me to what the "law" can give or take.
We are suppose to be better that this. Please! Stop talking down to my people! Stop pulling our young people into wars that they can't win or making promises that they can't keep. What they are left with are broken hearts and angry/hostile feeling toward people like me who are only trying to help.
My people can be so uninformed and with a tendency to rule on emotionalism rather than the letter of the law or policy set forth by governance. For starters, if these signs had been painted by gang members, we would call it graffiti and there would have been little if any attention paid to the removal.
My point is, it does not matter who/when/where/ or why the City's property was laced with unauthorized markings, remedy should be the same.
I read the "open letter" from Lumumba's daughter. My heart was saddened because in spite of the fact that she and Antar are lawyers, she could not speak to this situation in terms of legality. She spoke out of sadness and grief. There are four pneumonics of grieving : sad, mad, bad and GLAD. We are "SAD" when we lose a love on; we are "MAD" because they died - We question and challenge even our "God". Then there is our coming to term with the fact that the love one's condition was "BAD". The fact that they were able to cease from pain and suffering allows us to experience "GLAD"ness. Everyone does not experience these behaviors and thoughts in the same pattern,i.e., your "MAD" might come before your "SAD".
There are many people who had respect for Mayor Lumumba; however, there are many others who have respect for the law.
An emergency session could have been called by the president of the City Council and a vote could have been taken to deal with this situation retroactively.
Now I can say that I was not only corrected by a 1st grade teacher: I was also corrected by a journalist. :) :)
When I think of Horhn, I only see his push card with a big horn on it. Don't forget to go to the polls between 7 am and 7pm. Don't forget to vote for Johnson - experience you can trust!
Please forgive me for the mispelling of Pinocchio's name. A first grade teacher in Chicago read the post and called to correct me. She is a dear friend so I can consider it constructive criticism. LOL! Stop laughing: How many of you bloggers here could remember how to spell Pinocchio? I surely didn't, but, I do know that Horn has not told the truth on this and many other things. By now, if he were Pinocchio, there would be much length to his nose.
I just received a post card from John Horn. On the front of the card, he pictures Harvey,Margaret, Yarber and Priester. He accuses Harvey of "sticking ratepayers with a $90,000,000 bill. The crazy thing is that Priester was not a part of the Johnson Administration. Priester has only been in office 7 months.
The truth is that Priester was a member of the council that voted on the 108% water and sewer rate increase. Also, Chocwe Lumumba was the mayor and it was his deal - NOT former Mayor Johnson"s.
Mr. Horn, remember the little boy in the story book whose nose kept growing. I know you were a former actor and now you are playing the role of panokeo.
I can't believe that Yarber has said so many positive things about his Public School Experience as Principal. I am very surprised that parents from Marshall Elementary School were not up front and center about the negative academic condition at Marshall during Yarber's administration. Wheather he retired/was fired/or left to avoid the heat, these are the STATS and the FACTS:
2008 - 2009 - Score 122 "Academic Watch"
2009 - 2010 - Score 118 " At Risk of Failing"
2010 - 201 1 "f a i l i n g"
yarber was principal during all of those years and he left at the end of 2011. How do these people sleep at night while knowing that they are lying to voters?
I can't believe that the council would listen to Priester say, "Write a check". This sounds like something my children use to say when I said that I didn't have any money. They would simply say, "Write a check."
This money belongs to taxpayers and this is one BIG example of why experience counts. The only person In that large pool of candidates with that kind of experience and integrity is former Mayor Harvey Johnson.
He has finally convienced voters that he has done many things during his 12 years in office; So, the tale of "He hasn't done anything" is slowly but surely dying. He has also been able to share with voters how they can simply check the tax roll to prove that he has not moved to Madison.
Mr. Priester's intent was to discover gargantuan fault with Johnson; however, what he discovered was glaring exposure of his own ineptness.
This was a great interview! One would think that there would be fewer challengers based on the fact that the Mayor or a city has to be more than a popularity contest or one who tends to make people feel good.
The one question I am hearing during these debates is "What will you do to carry out Mayor Lumumba's plan for the city. Let's be honest: The only two plans we were able to witness was 1. The 1% tax increase that the citizens of Jackson will not have anything near a fair voting procedure. The Commission has 7 votes out of a total of ten. The Council has 3. This is "Taxation Without Representation." This is akin to a "Master - Slave" situation. 2. The other thing was Mayor Lumumba raising the water and sewer bill by 108%. I have lived in Jackson over 45 years and never have I witnessed any bill raised that high at any one time.
There is an old "Negro Spiritual" called: **Let the Work I've Done - Speak for Me. I am assigning this old spiritual to former Mayor Harvey Johnson. The words are so fitting and appropriate!
