The news of a decrease in "Homocides" should be music to Former Chief, Rebecca Coleman's ear. This report is evidence of some of the positive work while under her watch.

Car Jackings are significantly increasing, according to this report. Many of these cases could be avoided if the public were better educated on what to do in certain cases. I'm sure that Chief Horton will be excellent in this, as other areas of law enforcement. He, too, is well trained with great teaching skills.

@Duan

"If we are going to focus on getting Jacksonians hired- then we need to make a conscious effort to ensure there's readily available transportation for them to get there also."

Mayor Lumumba claims to be focused on hiring people from Jackson; however, in view of the fact that his Chief of Staff lives in Madison and his City Administrative Officer (CAO) lives in Ridgeland, one wonders if he will continue to say one thing, while doing another. Have we been sold a bag of lies or does this Administration think that citizens will not hold them responsible and accountable for things they say and do? People, just as elephants have LONG memories: Wasn't it just yesterday that such a stink was raised because of Chief's Coleman's ownership of a home in Clinton? I think so.

There was also a beautiful article (JFP) on Peter Teeuwissen, former City Attorney, and his contributions and sucesses during the Johnson and Melton terms. Peter Teeuwissen did not know, while speaking at the Coffee Shop, that he would not be retained: Good by Peter, Our new City Attorney will be Mayor Lumumba's law partner.

Promises made: Promises not kept.

Mr. Priester, Vice President of the City Council, hasn't anything to worry about as it relates to "Residency Requirements" although it is an established fact that Mr. Priester lives in Woodhaven, which is in Ward II, proper.

Great Post. Yarbour did a great job and it is very unfortunate that he was not given a chance to continue.

Former Mayor Harvey Johnson deserves credit for all of the business activities mentioned in this article. The only thing so far that our new Mayor can take credit for is his business position,i.e., "If you want to do business in Jackson you had BETTER be ready to hire the people of Jackson."

For me, the language is a bit harsh although I do understand the idea of hiring Jacksonians. Tone and tactful business ethics will lead to positive relationships. A kick a$$ position will only run businesses, home-owners, tourist and those of us who love this City, away.

@Tyler Cleveland

"The good news: Tillman approved Cooper-Stokes' seating arrangement assignment......."

Is this really good news? Who cares about where on the council these seven (7) folks sit? This is soooo juvinile and unimportant. Cooper-Stokes thought that she should have her spouse's seat from the very beginning.

The bad news: This community has elected a Mayor and Seven (7) Council Persons to represent the City of Jackson. The Mayor has made his choice for the positions of Chief of Police and Fire Chief. It should be the responsibility of the Council to "VETT" these two men - not the city-at-large.

It was reported in the JFP that they, along with other media outlets received an e-mail stating that Mr. Owens (Lumumba's Appointed Fire Chief) was charged with stealing a car and was placed on administrative leave and that he failed a very important exam. According to Mayor Lumumba, he emphatically states that "The past is the past" and that he knows all about Mr. Owen's past, but, he is unwilling to consider those issues. He further stated that he has known Owens for 8 years. My point is, why invite the community to a ball game that has already been played and the winners have been announced?

Please, let's get focused and get on track!

"......wrong environmental trigger, you're going to kill someone for no reason...THAT'S my fear of this law."

I agree; however, I do understand where A.G. Hood is coming from; His job is to interpret and uphold the law. If we are going to bring this madness to a halt, we must first change the law. I don't think that anything short of this will keep "Open Carry" from becomming our reality.

Also, I'm not impressed with the restrictions because we are most vulnerable on the streets and sidewalks in these communities: these are the areas that are impossible to escape flying bullets!

Does anyone know the individuals who make up the team, other than Dr. House and Dr. Grey, to deliver compliance in this law suit? My concern stems from the fact that JPS has always been weak in the hiring of appropriate staff to address issues of screening, placement and the educating of children with disabilities.

The focus can not be on academics alone: The needs of this special population involves so many arms and it is apparent that JPS continues to miss the mark. Until we have skilled people in policy making positions, a few months, even a few years, will not be enough time to comply.

Let the fireworks begin!

This is insane! Mr. Charles Tillman - Presdent of the City Council for the City of Jackson? Not to be disrespectful; however, this gentleman spends much of his time sleeping during televised sessions of the Council Meetings and misses key points with much difficulty responding.

Tony Yarbar did a great job and it would make sense to let him continue. Margaret Simone should have been at least a Vice. Politics are leaning towards strange alliances.

As for the appointment of Owens as Fire Chief, one wonders if the community will have that same trustful opinion as voiced by Mayor Lumumba. Jackson residents should put on emotional seat belts: We are headed for a rocky ride!
