They didn't disturb the graduation what part of that don't you understand? They did a silent protest. So I am still trying to understand how you take that and compare it to Westboro? The fact you even compared the two is offensive. All they did was wear stickers and cords in support of LGBT rights and you find that to be the same as shouting "God Hates <whomever> " at funerals? That is a big ole bunch of false equivalency!
Had they disrupted the graduation then you would have a point but they didn't come close.
Turning it over to Skinner is the worst idea they have had yet. He shouldn't even be allowed to be on the bench due to some of the violations of parents and children's rights he's allowed to get away with from the bench.
Do they have to for it to be wrong? Governor Bryant has appeared as a guest on AFA radio more than once that in and of it's self is enough to protest. Saying there is a time and a place to protest is a nice way to say please don't make people uncomfortable. They didn't disrupt anything so what is your issue? They weren't there to be disruptive just as a reminder. It's not like this is the only offensive thing Phil Bryant is up to there are plenty of things he has done that have and will have dramatic impact on the state like rejecting medicaid expansion, constantly attacking abortion rights, spending valuable state money to drug test people on TANF, supporting fracking as a sound economic decision. If anything he should be grateful he's not protested everywhere he speaks.
I don't believe the LGBTQ students who were graduating deserved to be slapped in the face by having him as a speaker. There is never a bad time to stand up to injustice, bigotry, and inequality.
Why does one negate or impact the other? As if by following the Ugandan story people are neglecting the girls in Nigeria.
You are hijacking the topic-just like we could choose to talk about how many young girls and boys are being killed in US drone attacks. See how topic hijacking works?
Except when if ever has the JFP covered the outlying areas the same way they cover Jackson? Do they cover their city council meetings, development, and mayor's races in the same as they cover Jackson? I don't believe they do. The JFP is essentially a local paper with statewide reach and coverage. So again I am not sure what you are getting at.
The AFA also advocated that the children of LGBT parents be placed in foster care because gay parents can not be fit parents. They are absolutely an anti gay hate group.
Mississippi has an abortion fund that the Mississippi chapter of the National Organization of Woman started a year ago. It helps women pay for abortions (and barriers to getting to their procedure like child care or gas) and Plan B contraception. We have done online fundraising and are currently working on becoming part of the National Network of Abortion Funds (NNAF). One of the reasons we have not used a system like gofundme is they take up to 10% of the money donated and frankly we need every penny donated for the women we help. If you or anyone else is interested in donating PLEASE go to our paypal page tinyurl.com/mltpq6y
As far as credentials for doctors it's not for a lack of trying on the part of the clinic. The doctors who work there are board certified Ob/Gyn's. The more important point is admitting privileges are unneeded and meaningless. They don't protect women at all. First off abortion has a very low complication rate. Second the clinic has a transfer agreement with a local hospital. This means the hospital already agrees to accept and treat any patient if there is an emergency. Just like any health emergency when you go to the hospital and are treated by the doctors on staff at the hospital and your doctor calls and checks in. They may or may not come to see you. Even if you believe admitting privileges are a good thing what good would admitting privileges do the women who don't live in Jackson? What if a complication arises once they go home? They aren't going to come back here for treatment in an emergency. So bottomline this is all a smoke screen to create hoops so lawmakers have a cause to close the clinic.
We need to tell our lawmakers we have had enough of TRAP laws (targeted regulations of abortion providers) and that it's time for the Governor to stop playing politics with reproductive healthcare. We support Mississippi women and families-full stop.
