Kimberly Jacobs, gallery director of Gallery1, sponsored by Jackson State University, says Gallery1 is more than just an art gallery.

"It is a fine arts space that preserves and grows the legacy of art at Jackson State University by showcasing the permanent collection and featuring changing exhibits by contemporary artists," she adds, quoting from the Gallery1 mission statement.

To celebrate the first anniversary of Gallery1, the staff is throwing a Sidewalk Soiree Aug. 31. "(The occasion has) historic importance to show off the growth of Jackson State University. Being located in the historic Lynch Street corridor will add another dimension to the soiree," Jacobs says.

Gallery1 hosts along with neighboring businesses EnVison Eye Care and the Penguin Restaurant. The Penguin will provide complimentary hors d'oeuvres in addition to wine and music. Amos Brewer, a regular at the Penguin Restaurant, plays light jazz beginning at 6 p.m., followed by singer-songwriter Rhonda Richmond.

Sidewalk Soiree features the artwork of JSU alumnus Tony Davenport, an award-winning artist known for his many exhibits of historic vistas and portraits of Mississippi. Additionally, a limited-edition poster featuring a new painting by Davenport will be available and the artist will be available for autographs.

The Sidewalk Soiree is Aug. 31 at 6 p.m. at One University Place (1100 John R. Lynch St.). Call or visit jsums.edu/gallery1 for more information.
