We All Loved Her

In the last couple of months, the music industry has taken quite a hit when it comes to obituaries. Hubert Smith, Howlin Wolf's guitarist, passed. We lost rapper Heavy D not too long ago, as well as Jimmy Castor, an American funk R&B saxophonist, and "Soul Train" emcee Don Cornelius. (I'm telling you, at my house growing up, we knew Saturday cartoons were over once we heard the "Soul Train" theme song.

Gallup Poll Not ‘Tightening' on National Vote

The assumption is that four days out from a Presidential election, the national polls would show continued tightening in the race between the two major party candidates. And, while these polls are only broad indicators of the candidates' chances (since it's the Electoral College that ultimately matters), it's interesting to see today that Gallups three models -- registered voters, traditional likely voters and expanded likely voters -- all showed increases for Obama in Friday's three-day rolling poll. One-third of the poll was conducted after the Obama infomercial and joint rally with Bill Clinton on Thursday.

What Went Wrong with Fable?

Fable. Even if you aren't in with the video gaming culture, you've probably heard of Peter Molyneux's most ambitious project to date. Years in the making, the idea behind Fable was to have a world that you completely shaped—you kill a man, 10 game-years later, his son returns for your head. Save a kid's life, and he could return the favor one day. Plant a sapling as a boy, and when you're a wizened old man, you can see that it's grown. Unfortunately, Fable doesn't accomplish this.

[Guy] Surviving the Zombie Apocalypse

A lot of things keep people up at night these days: terrorism, recession, environmental catastrophe. But these aren't the things I worry about. No, I worry more about zombies and the apocalypse that is sure to come one day if scientists keep up their horrible experiments.

Karen Parker

I met Karen Parker on a warm December afternoon with the sound of wind chimes drifting through the open door of New Vibrations, her Fondren book and gift store "for the evolving spirit." She was unpacking necklaces when I arrived. "They have stone gems inside the vials, and each little stone represents an emotional benefit, like allowing you to de-stress or feeling like your energy is protected," Parker explained.

A New Jersey State of Mind

A Review of "Garden State"

Films like "Garden State" aren't necessarily rare in terms of premise or spirit, but seldom do they come across with the sort of texture and freshness seen in this auspicious directorial debut from "Scrubs" star Zach Braff. An unconventional, richly observed romantic dramedy, "Garden State" is an intelligent and frequently humorous account of the uncertainties and difficulties confronted at the threshold of adulthood. The movie will be screened in Jackson at Hal & Mal's on Monday, Dec. 13 at 7:30 p.m. as part of Crossroads Film Society's series of independent films. It will also be released on home video at the end of this month.
