AG's Office: Assistant DA to Testify For Prosecution After Charges Dismissed

One of Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith’s former assistant DAs will testify for the prosecution in his trial for alleged tampering with wire-fraud suspect Christopher Butler, the attorney general’s office said today. Special Judge Larry Roberts dropped charges against ADA Jamie McBride while jury selection was underway earlier today.

Mississippi Reports First Swine Flu Cases

The Mississippi State Department of Health today confirmed three cases of H1N1 flu, commonly called swine flu, in Harrison County on the Gulf Coast. The people infected, two adults and one child, have all fully recovered.

Crisler Gives Scholarships to Ward 6 Students

For six years, with the aid of local businesses and organizations, Ward 6 Councilman Marshand Crisler has given a scholarship to students who attend the two high schools in his ward, Wingfield and Forest Hill. This year, he has expanded the $500 scholarship award to include a recipient from Lanier High School, where Crisler volunteers with 100 Black Men. Crisler awarded the scholarships this year to Tina Carter, 18, Forest Hill High School; Tiara Robinson, 18, Wingfield High School; and Alyssa Spencer, 18, Lanier High School.

Editor & Publisher is keeping track of daily newspapers' presidential endorsements. Through today (Oct. 23): "Sen. John Kerry continues to pile up the newspaper endorsements, but in a reversal of past trends it was President Bush who nabbed the larger papers in today's update of E&P's exclusive tally. While only adding four papers to his total, Bush did win the backing of two big papers. [...] Kerry now leads 48-34 in the number of papers that back him. In our updated chart below, we find that Kerry now leads Bush in the circulation of papers backing him by almost 2-1, but just a few days ago the incumbent trailed 5-1 in that category. Kerry's papers have 8.9 million readers while Bush's clock in at 4.7 million, so far."

DOH Reports 2 West Nile Cases

The state Department of Health reported the first two cases of West Nile virus in Mississippi in 2012 last week.

The Good News

The good news from the Mississippi Animal Rescue League is both Happy and Rosie have found forever homes. Happy and Rosie were both featured in the Jackson Free Press and I for one am hoping that the wonderful Free Press readers were in part responsible for these two great dogs finding homes. I also heard through the grapevine that Happy is going to be living in the Fondren Area. I hope I see her out walking with her new owners.

Mississippi Mulls Marriage Amendment

The Advocate reports: Mississippi gay and lesbian leaders are trying to raise awareness about a bill that would constitutionally ban gay marriages. "We've got the word out through memberships, through our e-lists, our Web sites. This is part of educating the public on the situation," said Jody Renaldo, executive director of Equality Mississippi. "We're trying to educate general Mississippians who really are not aware of gay and lesbian issues."
