URGENT: Good Samaritan Center Needs Help NOW
Please read and do whatever you can do, folks:
[Verbatim] Dear Friends, The economy is hurting donations and Good Samaritan Center is challenged right now. In addition, Christmas is almost here and our social service staff has been busier than usual taking applications for holiday assistance from disadvantaged families; many of these families never asking for assistance before. While we received a number of donations and requests to adopt children before Thanksgiving, donations and adoptions have both come to a screeching halt. Our need far outweighs what we have been able to do so far. We still have many, many children (hundreds) needing Christmas presents and our pantry has less than a weeks worth of food. We are desperate and we need you.

Tonight, however, he is speaking at Jackson State University about poverty. He intends to motivate some students into action.
Carol Clark Hammond
Michelangelo once said, "He who does not master the nude cannot understand the principles of architecture." It's just one of many quotes by which Carol Clark Hammond lives. As a freelance artist, she specializes in portrait drawing and courtroom sketching. Her work these days comes sporadically, however, because her specialties seem to be going out of style.

Testing Another Feature…‘Flip' Version
Scroll to the bottom of the JFP site and you'll see an image of this week's cover...up until now, clicking that image has taken you to the cover story or package. But I thought we'd try something else with that image...it now links to a "flippable" version of the JFP, complete with images and the original design. This is something of a "home-grown" version of this feature (right now I can't embed links on pages and that like) but we're testing it to see how interesting it is. Take a look and see what you think -- feel free to leave comments here.

Legislature Slows Its Roll
The Mississippi Legislature got off to a productive start last week, with the passage of an economic incentive package and an extension of workforce training funds, two measures that Gov. Haley Barbour had requested. That spirit of compromise seems to have waned, though, as the House and Governor's office remain locked in a standoff over Barbour's budget-cutting authority.
