We All Loved Her

In the last couple of months, the music industry has taken quite a hit when it comes to obituaries. Hubert Smith, Howlin Wolf's guitarist, passed. We lost rapper Heavy D not too long ago, as well as Jimmy Castor, an American funk R&B saxophonist, and "Soul Train" emcee Don Cornelius. (I'm telling you, at my house growing up, we knew Saturday cartoons were over once we heard the "Soul Train" theme song.

Alabama Loud and Proud

Lee Bains III and the Glory Fires bring together multiple strands of southern music to make a hard-charging, soulful sound.

[Music] New Music, Old Soul

When one of my friends called and said Jaguar Wright was coming to Jackson, he had difficulty finding words to describe her voice. Wright's singing transports you from reality to another world where melodies float freely and you can rest easily. When the vocalist couldn't recollect the title of one of her favorite songs from fellow Philadelphian Bilal's album "First Born Second," she sang most of it to me. Her sound did more for the lyrics than any song title could have. If you appreciate music—real music—you already appreciate Jaguar Wright.

OPINION: A Student of Life

Truth is the truth whether you sugarcoat it or not. It doesn't change the facts if you write it down on a notepad with hearts and smiles, won't change the meaning if you sing the words or speak slowly.

Michael Burton

Michael Burton's music takes him, top to bottom, all across the continent of North America: Montreal, Canada, Bermuda. This week, Burton's travels bring him home to Jackson to share his "soul jazz" when he plays Hal & Mal's on July 6. Burton, 26, graduated from Indiana University with a bachelor's degree in jazz performance and a master's of music degree in jazz studies. At Hal & Mal's, he will share the stage with other musicians of the same caliber, fusing together elements of jazz, soul, hip-hop, gospel and R&B. Burton is a product and true portrait of Jackson Public School's Academic and Performing Arts Complex (APAC) music program.

"Do The Bambi," Stereo Total

File away your Air and Cornelius and ready your DJ dance set with the kitschy sounds of German Gay Disco. While much of Stereo Total is cheesy filler, there is some outstanding retro synth dance candy amongst the nineteen tracks on the latest release by this Berlin Duo. Think multi-lingual Kraftwerk electro-pop Euro-trash for the Pet Shop Boys Underworld. In case you were wondering, the title track is about batting ones eyelashes to attract a latex clad soul lover. --Herman Snell & Alex Slawson

The Devil Went Down to Clarksdale

Yesterday I went to the Crossroads in the Delta. I'd been up there numerous times before, but was bringing a friend to see the famed Johnson "selling his soul" site.

Jamie Lidell- "Multiply"

Once strictly a laptop artist on the pristine Warp (U.K.) label, Jamie Lidell transcends and evolves on his first full length offering in five years. Although he is still on Warp, all prior comparisons end as he jettisons old notions of his identity and slams us with this beautiful 44 minute foray into Motown, Funk and New School Soul. One can hear hints of Al Green, Stevie Wonder and George Clinton, alongside the newer stylings of Beck, Prince and Jamiroquai, all seeping forth into a wonderfully familiar, yet unique module of sound. Highly recommended. - Alex Slawson and Herman Snell

[Stiggers] Soylent Collard Greens and Cornbread

2057-1/2: Terrorists have contaminated half of America's food supply. Since 2005, the affluent consume basic food items such as meat, bread, milk and vegetables, while the economically challenged eat moderate rations of water and artificially flavored green wafers called Soylent Collard Greens and Cornbread. Remember: Tuesday is Soylent Collard Greens and Cornbread Day!

[Talk] Kids in the Hall

At the 29th annual Jackson Music Awards, held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Aug. 4, much of the action happened in the hallway. Yes, great music was going on inside, with Jacksonian Bobby Rush headlining, and the awards ceremony honored a veritable who's who from the Southern soul-blues community: Tyrone Davis, Little Milton Campbell, Benny Latimore, Willie Clayton, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Bobby Rush, J.T. Watkins, Cadillac George Harris, Jesse Robinson, Big Moody Coney, King Edward, and Henry Rhodes.

[New Releases] Olga "Now Is The Time"

The dusty yellow hue of the cover picturing a woman wandering like some gypsy beside train tracks may remind the listener of the everyday blues musician, but Olga, the lead vocalist, is more. She is the waifish-looking woman on the cover, with the long, fairy tale blonde hair, but she possesses a voice soulful enough to leave the rib cage and its heart vibrating like the warmly strummed strings of her guitar.

MySpace Sex Fiends

Mississippi Attorney General Jim Hood, along with seven other state attorney generals, signed a letter Monday demanding that MySpace provide a list of sex offenders who use the online social networking site and explain the steps the company will take to alert both law enforcement officials and potential victims. In October 2006, Wired magazine published an article revealing that it had identified 744 sex offenders who use MySpace. However, the search could not identify sex offenders who either had not registered for sex crimes or used false information in their MySpace accounts.

Acupuncture is an ancient wellness technique involving the insertion of multiple thin needles (or fine wire, since they lack the hollow centers of traditional medical needles) into specific spots on the body.
