It's the Weekend!
Research shows that low-income youth suffer significantly from a loss of academic skills over the summertime, resulting in losses that contribute to an achievement gap that can make the difference between whether students set out on a path for college or decide to drop out of high school. Saturday, May 19 at 12 p.m., Operation Shoestring and community partners are working against this trend by providing parents and students with fun activities to promote summer reading at the Jackson Medical Mall (350 W. Woodrow Wilson Ave.), supplying the materials to continue these activities at home throughout the summer, and helping parents and students navigate the JPS Summer Reading Manual. There will be snacks, library card registration, story-telling time, and more. This event is open to the public. For more information, contact Robin Walker at 601-353-6336.

Today, the annual Spring Market kicks off at 9 a.m. at the Mississippi Trade Mart (1207 Mississippi St.) and runs through April 15. Health Fair Today
A health fair to fight obesity is happening today from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Jackson Medical Mall. Sponsored by Community Outreach for Health Awareness, participants will have access to free blood pressure, blood glucose, blood cholesterol and body mass index (BMI) screenings, along with nutritional and fitness demonstrations. Black Entertainment Television (BET) will be filming at the fair for an upcoming documentary on obesity in Mississippi.

I just ran into Mr. Minor's column about the Willie Morris library dedication. And I'm honored that he repeated what I told him at the dedication in it. The Jackson Free Press is also honored that Mr. Minor has offered us the use of his long-time desk in the media room in the Capitol this legislative session. We'll do our best to deserve to sit in it!

Revival time
Football fever is heating up in Mississippi. Soon thousands of fans of the Big Three will converge on Jackson for an athletic equivalent of the church revivals that used to be a summertime staple in the South. <b><em>Perception Is Reality:</b></em>
I have been following the news coverage (specifically in the Jackson Free Press and The Clarion-Ledger) about Frank Melton. Though I have seen some honest, in-depth reporting in the Free Press, I think that the editorial staff might be missing the point. Yes, Mr. Melton's tactics seem a little strange sometimes, and he may lack some social grace and/or media savvy to play the press like a fiddle, but generally Mr. Melton cares about the city of Jackson and is willing and ready to take action to bring about his vision of a cleaner, safer capital city.
