Deadly Pet Food Filler Open Secret in China
It seems that all that "free trade"—and loss of American jobs and trading economic strength in our communities for sweat shops—is starting to come home to roost by killing our pets. As the JFP has been saying for years, folks: Think Global, Shop Local. And that doesn't mean chasing our manufacturers to other countries, Barbour, Clinton, et al. What goes around does indeed come around.
Clicking For Dollars
The moment any person or group forms a new idea, the next question is, "How will we pay for it?" Whether it is a charity marathon, a city proposal for a bike trail, an idea for a comic book or the inspiration for a new work of art, few ideas come without a price tag.
[Arts] Viva La Revolution!
I moved to Belhaven a little over three years ago from The Country Club neighborhoods of Northeast Jackson. I had discovered the unique and somehow unknown appeal of downtown a little over a year before I graduated high school. I was fascinated with everything that Belhaven and Fondren offered. I dove headfirst into Jackson. I think most people would agree with me when I say that Jackson is sort of ass-backward.Anyone who has moved here from a larger city understands what I'm saying. We have the capacity, the venues, and, on top of all of that, we have a huge untapped creative talent. What we have lacked, my friends, is the motivation to do anything with it, even as we complain incessantly about having nothing to do in Jackson.
Hurricane Katrina: Two Years Later
As our state and our Louisiana neighbors face the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina with many thousands of people still living in FEMA trailers, and the possibility of another hurricane looming, the Jackson Free Press pauses to send a prayer to all the victims of a devastating hurricane. Click here to view the JFP's KatrinaBlog, started the day after the hurricane hit the Coast, and archiving Katrina-related stories and posts by JFP writers and readers.
[Arts] We Are All Guinea Pigs
They are planting an olive grove in Brookhaven at the Mississippi School for the Arts. Olive groves line the hills in the Mediterranean, a testament to previous generations' forethought, labor and stewardship with the gifts of the land. While the Mississippi School for the Arts may not really be an idealized paidea under the olive groves with Socrates as a teacher, it may be as close as we can get in the 21st century in Mississippi; it is a work of art in progress that will benefit future generations exponentially.
Miss. Dems Host "Sky Party" to Inauguration
Does the Mississippi Democratic Party know how to have (slightly ridiculous) fun? All signs point to yes:
Planet Weekly: [Melton Is] Rep in Dem's Clothing
A Planet Weekly columnist this week endorses Mayor Johnson and rips Frank Melton and some of his supporters:
Planet Weekly: Blogging the Mayor
Alan Lange's mayoral Web site is written up in the Planet Weekly this week. It's interesting that quite a bit of time is spent trying to show that Lange is not part of anyone's campaign staff:
Pink, Blue ... or Green?
With the uncertain future of our planet, many couples are wondering whether they should have children at all. That is a highly personal decision, but I will say that it is easier (and cheaper) than you might think to have a family with a low environmental impact and to raise thoughtful children who will be leaders in solving the next generation's environmental problems.

OPINION: Where the Real Blood Money Lies in Fight Against Initiative 65
"The truth is that the real blood money in the marijuana fight comes from political contributions from large pharmaceutical companies, ones that have a vested interest in limiting the ability of physicians to prescribe alternatives to their priciest medications."
