Bryan's Bold Predicitons
I was on a mission. Locked in a one-window room with no air-conditioning, just a laptop and a notepad, I began to burn up the Internet with my searches, watching film. My mission was to discover a bold prediction for the three FCS, formerly known as Division I, college football teams in Mississippi.
Charter Schools: The Devil's in the Details
Charter schools offer benefits, but the state must be cautious in using them. That mixed message emerged during a joint meeting of the Senate and House education committees yesterday morning where officials, community leaders and education advocates discussed the pros and pitfalls of charter schools.

[Pass The Mic] Auto-Tune: A Rant
There once was a local television commercial with cute children singing "This Little Light of Mine." One of the cutest things about children singing is the fact that they are children, and therefore they may not hit every single note spot-on. But this commercial was so far from cute I had to mute it every time it came on.
The Press and Politicians
Over the weekend, New York Times columnist Frank Bruni wrote about politicians' new "controlled and controlling approach" for talking to voters.
500 Years Later, Theological Debate Still Simmers
Is God's saving grace free to anyone who accepts Jesus, or did God predestine certain people for heaven and hell before the beginning of the world? That's a 500-year-old question, but it is creating real divisions in 2013 in the nation's largest Protestant denomination.

[Music] Honky-Tonk Heaven
After just the first few chords, it feels like the band Juanita Family And Friends are old friends. The Portland, Ore., sweethearts will perform at Hal & Mal's Restaurant on Wednesday, June 7. There's no better reason to skip Wednesday-night church than to attend this honky-tonk revival.

My Stocking Needs a Massage
Christmas. Next week. Gifts. Parties. Cards. Stress. Relaxation: You could use some right now, and we're betting the people on your gift list would love some, too. Sit down; take a few deep breaths and think. Who on your gift list has been really uptight lately and might enjoy a luxurious massage? Probably several names come to mind. Simple: Buy gift certificates to solve your problem and theirs at once. If you already have a favorite massage therapist, or the name of a highly recommended one, start there.
[TV] A Soapbox Alternative
Tired of standing on that shaky box of wood, the sound of your voice becoming moisture laden with 90 percent (or more) humidity? Take a cue from June Hardwick and Stacia Glasgow, two Jackson women who have traded in their soggy stances for the air-conditioned studio of public access television. Both Hardwick and Glasgow produce shows for Public Education and Government (PEG) Network Studios. The shows alternate weekly time slots at 1:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m. Fridays on channel 18. Glasgow's "Candlewax Café" focuses on local visual, performance and literary arts, while Hardwick defines her "Village Drum" as more issue oriented.
Now, Just Who is Basil?
Broadstreet Bakery at Banner Hall, 362-2900, has among its November specials three low-carb alternatives, some new chicken dishes, a Lemon-Basil Pork Loin Sandwich and the return of Shrimp Pasta. … Flashbacks Espresso Café, 5620 I-55 South, 372-3220, brings a bit of nostalgia as well as a large variety of cappuccinos and lattes to the South Jackson area. About time, I'd say. There are lots of us sophisticated people out south of town, not that I drink coffee, but I've found out you can get those Italian-sounding cuppas (oh, I just love to hear Italian) minus the coffee.
