Men of Leisure — "Men of Leisure"

It's hard playing music influenced by the likes of the Allman Brothers, Neil Young and the more melodic, song-based version of the Grateful Dead without botching it. A fair number of southerners dig those bands, and while it's not my usual cup of tea, I can say objectively that most bands attempting this style tend to make an ass of themselves.

Another Brand Of Football (Or Should We Blame This On ESPN?)

Remember Australian Rules Football? That was a staple on ESPN back in the early 1980s before the network got rich enough to show college football, college basketball, NFL, NBA, NHL, Major League Baseball, etc., etc. 24/7 and had to expand to three channels to get it all in. The Australian game's rules seemed incomprehensible (Dr. S was probably drinking and not paying attention), but Dr. S found it fun to watch because of the violent collisions and frequent bloodshed. And Dr. S' roommate thought the referee's signals after a score were the funniest thing ever. His parents wasted a lot of money on a college education.

Panda Poop Paper

No, it's not a tongue twister. Then again, maybe it is - spittle included. Here's a little tidbit that is an example of how recycling can be taken to a whole new level. A smelly new level, but a new level nonetheless.

Delicious Dip Into Misery

The modest packaging of The Bent Branches' debut is detailed with hand-screened blue birds that appear to have escaped from an open cage hanging from bare branches, and the name of the album, "Salvo," is printed along the bottom in an antique, circus-type script. It is a suitable package for the delicate, down-home feel of the music contained within.

Worth Watching

Nik Askew is a British filmmaker with a marvelous talent for speaking with people about their innermost motivations and feelings. His short films are small gems of joy, peace or inspiration—and sometimes all three—a quiet, thoughtful pause in a world gone a little mad. Each one features just one or two ordinary, yet completely extraordinary people and they run about 5 or 6 minutes, max. There's a new film most Monday mornings (natch!). If you're searching for a bit of sanity, check out his Monday 9 am TV website.

[Music] Get Your Booty Shaking

I do so love a good, authentic funk band, and nothing gets my booty shaking faster than the sound of a sloppy New Orleans drumbeat and a Hammond B3 organ. Friday, April 13th will be a lucky day for me and other funk fans as NOLA-based Papa Grows Funk climb the stairs to take the stage at George Street Grocery.
