<b><u>Solid Work</u></b>
Keep up the solid work with the Jackson Free Press. I grab every one of those free copies I can get my hands on. We agree on precious little (actually, in conversation, we all might surprise each other!), but one of my favorite moments every week is to stretch back on my lounge chair and crank the JFP open. Jackson is focusing more of its financial resources on schools with the neediest students, bucking a national trend, U.S. Department of Education data suggest.
Melton Protégé Pleads
Mayor Frank Melton says he will be waiting for Michael Taylor to get out of prison, probably before he is 21. "He is too good of a kid to give up on," Melton told The Clarion-Ledger last week. "I will be there for him when he gets out." Currently, Melton is refusing to speak to the Jackson Free Press.
Andre de Gruy
Attorney Andre de Gruy knows that the American justice system isn't perfect. Sometimes circumstances combine to convict people who didn't commit the crimes they're accused of. As director of Mississippi's Office of Capital Defense Counsel, de Gruy and his staff of lawyers represent people whom Mississippi has convicted of the most heinous crimes, mostly murders and rapes.
Lifting As We Climb
The women wore breathtaking hats to hear Lerone Bennett Jr. A gargantuan canary-yellow feather creation was perfectly calibrated to match the wearer's canary-yellow suit. A bright-pink straw hat had big pink plastic roses encircling the brim. And, on the head of a younger woman, a red glitter cowboy hat winked a hint of ironic non-conformity.

If you're feeling dramatic this weekend, head over to the Jackson Academy Performing Arts Center tonight to see the Ballet Magnificat! Spring Concert Series. Tickets can be purchased online for $10-$30. If ballet isn't quite your thing, take a drive down Interstate 20 to Clinton and see the play "The Watch They Keep," at 7 p.m. at the Old Clinton Junior High School Auditorium for $12. BCBS: Domestic Abuse Not Pre-Existing Condition
State Insurance Commissioner Mike Chaney has clarified a statement he made to the Jackson Free Press used in a story Wednesday regarding Mississippi being one of the eight remaining states whose laws allow insurance companies to use a history of domestic abuse as a reason to deny health-care coverage.

Thirsty for some drinks and music? Start off your weekend at Hal & Mal's in their Big Room with a show by Robert Randolph and the Family Band. The show starts at 9 p.m., tickets are $25 at the door. Also tonight, Rhonda Richmond will also be performing at Afrika Book Cafe at 9 p.m. Tickets are $15. If music isn't your thing, Rainbow Whole Foods Co-Operative Grocery will have a dinner and a movie in the Rainbow Plaza at 7:30 p.m. The featured film is "Sita Sings the Blues," and a vegetarian meal will be provided. If you've got some energy left over from this short week, head over to Body Benefits on Pear Orchard Road tonight at 5 p.m. for a three-hour spinning workshop. Cory Maye
Cory Maye will finally be a free man after serving 10 years in jail for a twisted murder conviction. Circuit Judge Prentiss Harrell of the 15th Judicial District of Mississippi agreed to a plea deal July 1 from Mayes for manslaughter for the 2001 death of Ron Jones Jr. After pleading guilty to manslaughter, Maye was sentenced to 10 years in prison, time he had already served.

Today, EnVision Eye Care (1316 N. State St.) celebrates its fifth anniversary at 4 p.m. with giveaways and an eyeglass trunk show. It's a free event, so come by and see what's happening. Thank you for all your hard work that resulted in the "best-ever" Chick Ball. Donna and her gang at the Free Press have truly outdone themselves this year. These ladies have raised over $7000 for us up to this point, and the money is still coming in. The state of Mississippi is expanding access to free coronavirus testing for teachers and school-based emergency telehealth coverage after more than 70 of the state's 82 counties have reported outbreaks during their first few weeks back in the classroom.
