The Clarion-Ledger did a story about Regina Quinn which could be labeled "We Are a Day Late, and a Dollar Short." What got my attention was the fact that to the JFP, Ms. Quinn reported that she filed "Personal Bankruptcy", when asked, "How did you fall?" What seems disingenuous is the fact that Ms. Quinn filed bankruptcy twice; however, the way that it was reported, average readers would simply miss that point. She was able to pay off her second filing in 2010 through a garnishment of her wages at Jackson State University. It is important to remember that a City would not have the luxury of filing Bankruptcy twice and recovering to a positive position and beyond.

It's one thing for an individual to take risks, fail, and get back up. That is adminrable. However, it is eminently more diffcult and dangerous to walk into the Office of Mayor and take risks, fail and expect to get the City back up again. We witnessed that scenario during the Melton Administration: A six million dollar "Rainy Day Fund" turned into a personal slush fund reminiscent of the recklessness of the Bush Years when he squandered trillions in surplus money left from the Clinton Administration.

Ms. Quinn attemps to equate her individual "fall" and her resillence to the management of an entire city; It is wise to remember that we do not all FALL and RISE together. So far, this City through the thoughtful, deliberate, prudent and determined actions of the current Mayor, we have avoided the fates of Detroit, Philadelphia, Chicago and others.

I am not suggesting that a person can not fall upon difficult financial times: I am stating however, that if Ms. Quinn can not manage personal finances of a hundred thousand dollars, how will she be able to manage hundreds of millions? I would like to know exactly what is it, at this point in her career, that encourages the belief that she can manage the City's billions.

I read some of the complimentary blogs following the article in the CL - designed for damage control. Many were critical. Ms. Quinn's desire to serve the community is above repoach and is to be commended; however, putting the continued survival of the City FIRST should be the top qualifier for anyone seeking this position.

Just saying.

@ Duan - "I just don't get the logic sometimes."

There isn't any log: It is all about power and control and their hope of setting up an under class. Abortion is legal and there isn't any need to challenge Roe v Wade. Who will pay the bills when MS is sued by physicians, their patients and clinics that lose revenue secondary to the fact that these ugly demonstrations keep women away who simply want a breast exam or a pap smear.

Duan, again I say, there isn't any logic: It is ignorance, arrogance and a plan to make life more difficult for women and espcially the poor. It is not sometime; It is always.

"I hope this gives an indication that when we talk about cuts in Washington, (D.C) or we talk about sequestering funds, it has a definite impact here in the city of Jackson, Johnson said."

Priceless!

If Congress does allow this self-made crisis to happen, MS will be severely impacted. With all of the great plans announced by Mayor Johnson to include city grant awards to non-profits, these offers will become a beautiful thing that turns UGLY!

Certainly a country that put a man on the moon over fifty years ago can figure out how to put a 102 year old on a voting machine shorter than seven (7) hrs after arriving at her poll.

This "HOW" query sounds primitive.

Why can't we stop dancing around Mary Hawkins' REAL motivation for not wanting This "element" in Madison? "Element" is CODE for BLACK.

Dwan, I don't mean to offend you, but, Mary Hawkins does not speak gingerly, kind, warm or fuzzy about JSU: She verbalizes and promotes a model wherein buildings and people look - a- like. Your argument about mississippi being your "first priority" falls on insensitive ears . The "home" for JSU is Jackson, MS and the location is JR Lynch Street.

Multiculturegirl, I admit that the Ayers case stinks; however, five million dollars is not enough for Jackson State to be held hostage. Opra Winfrey gave my almamater (TennSU) 20million.

Has the issue of reported missing votes been settled? I heard a news report last week that questioned the validity of the election for Senate Seat 28.

Both of these gentlemen have similar platforms; however, I am giving Mr. Crisler my support because Mr. Norwood stated that he will impose a punishment/fine on
parents who do not attend parent teacher conferences.

This position is another example of: Shoot, Aim, Ready.

There are sooooo many issues involved in the WHY of parents not attending these conferences. I have heard a more proactive strategy from Crisler. It involves the assembly of a team of people, to include volunteers, to aid in Institutional (School) Parenting.

Tony Yarbor, President of Jackson City Council, posed the question, "Why Not JSU?"

Answer:

1. JSU is a Historical Black University (HBCU). Does anyone remember how and why JSU received this status? All students who are non-black are considered a "Minority" which entitles them as recipients of a free education. How will setting up a campus in Madison with the expressed purpose to "ceate a climate for a more diverse clientele". Really? Will adding more non-paying student sincrease the financial coffers of JSU? I think not. Mayor Hawkins is promoting Exclucivity and Selectivity while President Meyes is focusing on Deversity for a "convenience-seeking group of potential students." Wasn't that the purpose of developing that costly, confusing corridor that links Madison to a 20min drive into JSU: The route that awards "Convenience-Seeking Students" the luxury of not driving through some of our less popular streets. Tulane is more than three hours away from Madison. Dr. Truly, Mayor of Canton, offered Dr. Meyers a seat at their table. To date, there has been no public comment.

2. Mary Hawkins have been able to build brick walls, movie theater, state-of-the-art shopping mall, etc. How does she do this.? The answer is simple: With tax dollars that come from the citizens of Jackson. It is known that Where they lead us: We will follow. Do you realize that the only business that could survive in Madison without Jackson shoppers is a tanning tub.

3. Madison, Pearl and other towns contiguous to Jackson advertise their goods, services and housing through commericials that are with few if any blacks. Mayor Johnson and the JFP are two positive sources that market Jackson's positives while the CL and Local TV Stations bring focus to crime and things that are wrong. You seldom hear of businesses that are coming, exceptional students from our public school system or kids who are following guidelines and preparing for a successful adult life.

4. We MUST develop a "Shop Jackson" Campaign: Educating our residents that when they send JSU to Madison, even as a satellite campus, we are sending tax dollars. Dollars that could be used for streets, city services, school improvements, and the list goes on. There is nothing that we NEED that can't be purchased in Jackson.

5. JSU has a teacher shortage. Let's get serious about taking care of JSU proper and not chase a town that has enjoyed far too many dollars that they didn't deserve and for sure that Mayor Hawkins has shown such ZERO appreciation.

Now, Riddle me that, Batman!
