> Amy Howe: Take a quick look at Footnote 11, which is on page 44 of the slip opinion: Those subject to the individual mandate may lawfully forgo health insurance and pay higher taxes, or buy health insurance and pay lower taxes. The only thing that they may not lawfully do is [not] buy health insurance and not pay the resulting tax.
This makes sense, really; I'm a little surprised, in hindsight, that the legislation didn't say this more explicitly at the outset. ACA has, as one component, a tax on all Americans; if you have a qualifying insurance policy, however, you get a deduction against that tax. (Just like if you have a qualifying mortgage, you get a deduction against taxes you otherwise have to pay. You don't have to buy a house if you don't want to.)
A very interesting note from "Lyle" from Scotusblog:
> Lyle: Interesting, at least to scholars, that while the mandate and its attached penalty are a tax for purposes of its constitutionality, but not for the Anti-Injunction Act. If it were a tax for AIA purposes, this case would not have been decided re the mandate.
This is interesting because technically they shouldn't have decided the law if it's a tax -- the Anti-Injunction Act (frequently called "an obscure law" but that came up during oral arguments) would preclude the court from bringing an injunction against a tax until it is actually collected.
Gotta get that contract done. I know some people *were* happy about the tweet because it showed that Drew is still a team player and hasn't been too turned off by the negotiations.

You can see the mobile version of the site at http://jfp.ms/ or at http://www.jacksonfreepress.com/ -- both will automatically format for a smartphone, and include Restaurants, Music Listings, events, headlines and more. Once we get the tweaks done on the Web version we'll be further tweaking the mobile version. Feel free to email with any requests for info you need while you're out-and-about.
Looks like the National Weather Service is giving us a "low" risk as the storm is turning toward the Florida panhandle, which is going to get beat up all week. Meanwhile we have 100 degrees to look forward to on Thursday according to the Weather channel; the JFP DoppelTweet3000 outlook pegs it at only 97 degrees.
Last time I filled up at the gas station at Fortification and Jefferson (across from Fenian's) it accepted my Kroger discount number and gas was literally under $3. Quite a feat in today's day and age. (And need I brag about how that far gas goes in the JFP's hybrid?)
Tennessee's number is pretty darned interesting. I'm guessing they reported it differently, but if they really did spend that much in the last few years there's an argument they didn't get much to show for it.

That's a pity about the brewery; we need to open up those possibilities here in the state!
